I always hate it when people talk about how surprised they are about the price of gas/oil/petroleum products. You are using a finite resource. New buyers (China and India, among others) are coming into the market as well. Scarcity, and demand, will continue to drive the prices up. I'm personally surprised that it hasn't gone up higher; the oil companies could get away with it (Bush is in their pocket).
I know the oil prices have dropped lately, but it won't stick. It can't stick (see Alaska Pipeline). Until affordable alternate fuels are brought into the market, we won't be seeing prices drop down to pre-9/11/01 levels.
Footnote. About that pre-9/11/01 nostalgia that floats around every September: It wasn't that great.
