What an incredible asshole

I just heard about this on last night's Daily Show, and it was so ridiculous I thought I'd share it here. If you don't feel like slogging through my recount, you can see the original broadcast of the report in question here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jwkeuenzx9g).

http://www.deadspin.com/sports/upload/2006/07/weneedyoucarlmonday.jpg

This is Carl Monday, Cleveland's self-styled "Investigative Reporter". He's spent years cleaning out corruption and decadence in the city he loves.

Well apparently the city got a bit too clean, because during sweeps week earlier this year, he resorted to exposing not murder or drug dealing, but indecency at the city's public libraries.

In the course of the "investigation", Monday and his crew set up hidden cameras designed to catch patrons in the act of viewing porn on the library's computers. One of these cameras caught one Michael Cooper "pleasuring himself", as the report called it.

Now, I know Cooper is pretty pathetic. He's in his twenties, still lives with his parents, and has nothing better to do than masturbate to porn at his local library. But the ferocity with which Monday went after him makes me sympathize.

Monday confronted Cooper, asking him some basic "man-on-the-street" type questions before launching his bombshell: telling him that they had caught him on camera. This report, which included (censored) video of the act, proceeded to air on the local network. They didn't even blur out Cooper's face, or withhold his name.

But that wasn't enough. Monday went on to air not one, not two, but five follow-up stories as Cooper was tried and sentenced for public indecency. He hounded Cooper so much that his parents turned on him, several times, knocking down his microphone and hurling expletives.

But the ace reporter couldn't resist braving this hostility to add a little insult to Cooper's considerable injury. He and his crew attended Cooper's sentencing, catching it all on tape. Then, after Cooper stormed out in shame and anger, Monday followed him out into the parking lot, asking, of all things, "Michael, you didn't seem too happy about the sentence. Any comment?" Suffice to say, things got pretty ugly...

Anyway, this just goes to show how low "journalists" will stoop in pursuit of ratings. Disgusting.

Someone should investigate the journalists. Interview them whenever they're in public, asking all kinds of personal questions and asking them to respond to all kinds of accusations. Look through their trash, do background checks on them to dig up any dirt and see how they handle it.

you put the url in wrong

he really shouldnt be doing that kind of thing and probably should have been charged with public indecency but is it really necessary to keep hounding him after the original report? he is a nobody who doesnt need to be kept in the news nor do his parents deserve this kind of treatment.

I wonder how long until someone offers $100 over PayPal to a link of a video of someone sticking Carl Monday with a shiv. Not that I'm offering $100 to stick Carl Monday with a shiv. Just... you know, I'd like to see that link... ;)

Yeah, but a journalist would be required to do that.

And then we have a vicious circle.

The smugness and affected superiority of Carl Monday makes me physically ill. Cleveland oughta rise up and smack this walking wank festival.

I loved how the Daily Show correspondent went to Mondays house and hounded him with questions on how to be like him

I've had to watch this douchebag of a reporter for a long time now. I'm rather pleased that his fame is spreading outside of his flagship station.

There are so many instances of Monday inciting people into smacking him on camera that it's now a running gag with everybody I know. Everytime someone points a videocamera at me at a wedding, my response if "BACK OFF, CARL MONDAY" !!

What he fails to realize is that he's become a caricature of himself, the douchebag sleazeball reporter who is hardly any better than his 'subjects'.

What a scoop; a dangerous man so perverted and such a danger to society that his crimes could be seen by any child...with high tech camera equipment and a slot on daytime TV.

Did no one alert them to the irony of a 'public interest' story that wouldn't have harmed anyone had they not actually pursued it?

The library guy is pretty weird like and sad but that reporter :headbang: bugger off! Hounding him all the way to the court case is harsh!

It's interesting that Carl Monday kept calling masturbation "having sex."

I guess Carl Monday "gets laid" a lot as a result of his charming personality.

He's the kind of guy who claims that sex is bad because sex with him always is.

Somebody should send him a link to TheEroticReview. Maybe he can get a nice escort to loosen him up a little and make him relax.

My favorite bit was when Jason Jones jammed the mike in Monday's face and asked "What's the best way to publicly humiliate someone? Like this?" Classic.

As a resident of Northeast Ohio for eighteen years, who has seen countless Carl Monday commercials, I can honestly say I've never actually seen him doing his report thing. I tend to avoid local news, so that probably has a lot to do with it.

Do a lot of people get that creepy "probably-a-pervert-trying-to-hide-it-but-not-doing-a-very-good-job-with-that-cheesy -mustache-and-slightly-too-carefully-combed-hair" vibe from him? Because I got that vibe as soon as I saw him.

$50 bucks says that within the year someone finds a whole bunch of kiddie porn on his computer.

Oh, the Daily Show would have a field day with that one. Jason Jones would get a movie deal for his "Are You Jackin' It?" series.

Yup, the reporter is a slimeball. This is a clear cut example of entrapment. Sad to say the least.

This isn't Carl MOnday's fault. He's not the one that did anything wrong.

DO you know whose fault it is? It's Cleveland's fault. How the fuck can anybody watch that douchebag? I couldn't even get through that seven minute video clip. If people in his broadcast zone did the reasonable thing and change the channel, that dork wouldn't have a job.

I'll give the producers at his station a small dose of blame too for giving that weasel air time.

Do you automatically think that all people who look like "him" are somehow into kiddie porn? You would also think that the library would be the absolute last place that anyone would indulge in kiddie porn especially when computers keep thumbprints of all materials viewed?

I can show that just because two reporters have nearly identical vigilante styles and nearly identical vigilante morals, and equal enthusiasm for publicly demonising people, it does not always follow that they look alike.
