Squirrels acting a little squirrely.

A boy was brutally attacked by a squirrel in the latest of several strong-arm robbery attempts in Mountain View's Cuesta Park. It seems squirrels have turned to violent robberies in an attempt to get the snacks that they have become addicted to.

Why didn't they just kill every squirrel in the park and check them all for rabies? Wouldn't that have been better than having the boy go through precautionary rabies shots?

Thats a shame-I hate to hear that.

Squirrels are rodents, but people feed and tolerate them. They get bold, agressive and destructive.

When I lived in Ocean County,NJ, they were everywhere-a real nuisance. Friends had them damage their house's attic, chewing through wood, wires,etc...
They are filthy-they carry fleas and they leave their waste everywhere.
They chewed through every heavy duty garbage can in town and feasted at their leisure. I used to kill two or three a week as they exited my garbage can with a 2 X 4, a screw driver or an axe. I even dropped a lit M-80 into the can after one to end his career.

People dont tolerate rats on their roof or in their attic-why squirrels?

"As a last resort, the city is now looking to trap the animals for possible euthanization, Muela said."
Why not just shoot them?
They die either way, its less expensive and time consuming, and they are just rodents.

The park is large and there are many ways they can go into the residential areas.

I know that park and am surprised this is going on.

This is new thing.

They feed the squirrels for years, perhaps decades, creating an ecosystem. Then they rob the squirrels of their food source... and they couldn't predict this behavior? Did they think the squirrels would just migrate to another area? And their solution, then, to this problem they created, is to euthenize them? That's humanity for ya.

So you kill all the squirrels within, say, a 10 mile radius of the park and test them. Anything to prevent a little boy from having rabies shots.

The money probably isn't there. Let alone the man power.

--edit--

Even with the info given. Rabies? I don't know. It sounds more like food aggression rather then rabies.

But I wasn't there......

What thought before action? What's the matter with you?

The simplist answer is to give them another food source. They have space for trees. Plant a few food sources and they will opt for safety in the tree.

When I was a kid we'd killed all of the squirrels within about a 15 mile radius. Of course, we'd killed and eaten them. The joys of living in the country.

We did the same thing, but without the eating part. They're too much like rats. It was just fun to shoot squirrels. Now, rabbits weren't so bad to eat. Neither are doves.

The solution? Give every kid in Frisco a BB gun, tell them not to shoot out each other's eyes. And let them kill squirrels.

We ate rabbit too, but dove hunting has only just be relegalized in Michigan.

That's about 50 miles north of the park in question.

They're good if done correctly. We'd usually make stew in a crock pot with the normal stew things, carrots and potatoes and such. I've also had it baked, and that was ok.

LOL, never mind. It isn't as funny if people think I'm actually serious and act like it would ever be a good solution..

Indeed. But rabies is one of those things that you treat as cautiously as possible. You get bitten by any wild animal, precautionary rabies shots are in order. I was just waiting for the same people who argued that rabies shots were so harmful and horrible that a display of meerkats should be killed and tested rather than have a girl who got bitten through her own stupidity take precautionary shots to come along in this thread. After all, this kid did nothing wrong at all.

Mountain View, Sunnyvale, whatever, it's all pretty damned close to one big city, almost all the way up to Napa.

They were pretty agressive there. When we bought that house, they were running all over the roof all day. I did a lot of landscaping, pruned all the branches away from the roof-they used the electric lines then.
The community had tns of oak trees loaded with acorns.

I didnt want them in my attic and I was worried if one of the kids or my wife brought the garbage out, it would be like a can of snakes jumping out if they opened the can. When I brought it out, I would tap the side of the can first and often, more than one would pop their head out, then run. Thats where I started to smash them with the 2X4. It was like "whack a mole"-and no clean up-they were already in the trash.

No squirrels around here-and I am in real wilderness. We have a red-tailed hawk's nest in the back yard-I'm guessing thats why the squirrles are so scarce here.
Its fine with me.

In post-9/29 world you always should be aware and don't wait for proof; don't wait for new acts of aggression. We now know what is the purpose of all squirrels, the question is only who funds them.

I always feed squirrels, they're cute. If you're patient enough you can even get them to eat out of your hand. Once, this daring squirrel even climbed up my skirt and dived into my bag looking for nuts. :D

Because, they're not meerkats.
