Kofi Annan's term as Secretary General finishes December 31 this year and the selection of the next UNSG is underway.
Here's the list of candidates: http://www.unsg.org/candidates.html
Who do you think it should be?
Who do you think it will it be?

Whichever one is least likely to be a US lackey. That means the Indian as far as I can see.

I heard the indian guy on the radio and liked him.

It would have to be a close call between Al-Hussein and Tharoor. The former has more experience with the sort of haggling that is needed in international diplomacy, the latter seems to be a good manager and able to build good organisational structures.

Ban Ki-Moon for should. That kind of name is just plain awesome. "Ban the Ki-Moon or we'll Zerg Rush you!"
For will be: the Indian dude. It'll either be him or the Latvian, as with the way the world is right now, I doubt a Sri Lanken, Jordanian, or Thai would be elected.

I want al-Hussein.
I'd probably support Al-Hussein. From what little I know of him, he would be a good choice. Plus, a Jordanian should be able to achieve consensus, and support from the West, the Middle East and most of the world.

I think Jimmy Carter has a good chance. He's about as dictator-friendly and anti-American as one can get.

Lunatic Goofballs!
I happily accept the nomination, and if chosen, I will make the Taco the official food of the United Nations. All the world will know the greatness of tacos. *nod*

scrap the UN. it does not work at all anyway, so it is useless.

Given recent experience, some might say that "dictator-friendly" and "anti-American" are a contradiction in terms when it comes to US Presidents. It's traditionally been a requirement for the White House to snuggle up to pro-American dictators.

*sigh*
I do find it mildly irritating when the ignorant start their tiresome anti-UN demands, without knowing anything about what the UN (and its numerous bodies) does.
If any of you had bothered to listen to the debate of the 61st session (you haven't? Why am I not surprised?), a great many countries are calling for major reforms to the way the UN functions, and most notably for reforms to the Security Council. Which, of course, the nations with veto power (the US, France, China...) will always block.

If this is really what you think, then you need to read a little more about Jimmy and some of his friends.

I'm not saying ole' Jimmy Carter was perfect. Far from it. The fact that I see him as a better US President than most of his successors doesn't mean I'm going to heap praise on him.

At the moment, he is the leading candidate.

It's obviously been implanted in my head from following the news along the way, but my first thoughts when I read the thread title were 'The guy from South Korea'. *shrug*.
