Marc Bolan/T. Rex/John's Children - Desdemona/Ride A white Swan/Laser Love/Solid Gold Easy Action/Calling All Destroyers

Teh (sic) kids should listen to more Bolan: finally getting round to listening to some of his LP's which aren't on scum-encrusted vinyl second-hand copies makes me suddenly sit up and go 'why has nobody ever played me these things before?.

And the moral of this story? Pushing thirty-five and watching live bands nearly every night of my life, there is still mucho music that can ride that mainline to your soul and hotwire your heart.

Living in the age of recorded music we are indeed fortunate fellows and often hapy bunnies. (Of course the fact that Bolan was stone-cold dead well before he got to my age whereas my recorded output amounts to just slightly above nought puts a tiny wee damper on things, but hey, this is the shit that we are prepared to both live and die for.)

Go beg steal or borrow a copy of the Futuristic Dragon LP from somewhere.

Heh, I've never been to a gig myself. Lucky you, eh? :p

And I'm now listening to "Marathon" by Rush, playing in Winamp. It's only 128kbps, but it'll have to do until I buy the original LP.

Live version or studio one? As you well know, I'm still a tad cynical of CD's, but the expanded Live At Leeds CD blows the socks off the rather limited LP version.

I'm pretty sure it's the studio version. I've never heard any recordings of live Who performances... I guess I should start looking.

Speaking of Live At Leeds, I had a Dead Men Walking set with that title on my laptop half a year ago. Very good stuff; the guys were exceptional that night. "Spirit Of '76" was probably the highlight of the set.

Agreed, although the only LP version of Live at Leeds that I've got is my dad's old, abused copy. The album cover has a bizarre smell, like whiskey that's three decades old.

I have a somewhat strange psychological relationship to old squinty Mister Peters and the Alarm: they wer what I listened to when I was about 14, and hearing them now simultaneously send shivers up my spine and makes me cringe with embarassment at what a fanboi I was back then.

The first Alarm LP is still a pretty darn good piece of kit, even if it does have a touch too much Dylan and not enough Derby Crash in it. The first EP/mini-LP has a rather good sound to it too, imagine if the Long Ryders were Welsh...

... sorry, I'm sure that last comment lost you completely.

As far as going to gigs goes: if it is any consolation I have sat through more hours of pointless and directionless, or just plain wrong-headed pablum (and most often with the backline cranked just too darn loud) than you are ever likely to have to endure. Of that, if nothing else, be grateful.

***

As far as the CD version of Live At Leeds goes: it would be an entirely unethical and quite possibly terms of service breaking thing if I were to mention filesharing.

And so I won't.

Not that there is anything wrong with the limited tracklist on the LP, as such, but with the inclusion of the fifteen(?)/twenty(?)/whatever minute version of My Generation and not much else beside you come away feeling that they were a band who were given to somewhat pointless rambling and self-indulgenct. Strangelty enough the additional tracks on the CD show them to be a much more focused band as they knock out three minute tracks like Tattoo in a more than workmanlike fashion.

...off a surprisingly good Lp for so late in their career. Personally I only really rate Princes of the Universe, Kind of Magic and One Vision on that Lp: the rest seems a bit too insubstantial for my tastes. All of course with the caveat that it is a load of knowing nonsense.

1: I feel that way about the rest of the songs by The Alarm on the setlist, really. Only "Spirit Of '76" comes off as any good; the rest, I can't even remember the track titles.

2: I don't understand completely, but I get where you're headed.

3: Well, I'm what you would call picky. I don't do things that I'm not quite sure will be even a touch decent... I'm like this with my music listening, thus my liking of only a few bands. I build only on what I like, as I never go on whims... Slow but steady.

Self titled. A fantastic album, but a little less pure DD's then Yes virginia.
