After a 20 year partnership, 7-11 has decided (http://money.cnn.com/2006/09/27/news/international/citgo.reut/index.htm?cnn=yes) to dump Citgo as it's exclusive supplier of gasoline. The chain claims this has nothing to do with Mr Chavez's performance at the U.N., but timing is everything, isn't it?
How many more repercussions will we see because of his unpopular speech? I know I don't buy gas there anymore. How about tearing down that awful sign in Kenmore Square?

So he'll sell his oil elsewhere. It's not like any oil rich nation is ever going to have a problem moving their product. Kind of like the Chris Rock thing where he goes "You don't have to sell drugs. Drugs sell themselves. You never hear a dealer say 'What the hell am I going to do with all this crack? It's just piling up all over the place.'"

Yeah calling him the devil was a little much, as the guy who's trying to get elected in Ecuador, Rafael Correa said.
"Calling Bush the devil is offending the devil," Correa told reporters "The devil is evil, but intelligent."
To get mad for chavez insulting Bush, while Bush basicly sexually assaulted another Nation's leader at the G8 summit, seems kind of a double standard. At least Chavez doesn't give people backrubs without asking.
I know that this really is a score for the good guys in the end. Bush may be a complete chump, but Chaves is for all intents and purposes a scumbag thug trying to be a big fish in a pond that's too large for him.
But then I think...What's eventually going to happen to the big Citgo sign outside Fenway? I'm no big fan of baseball but I don't want to see that old symbol go away...I'll miss it... :(

7eleven dropping citco gas was a retarded move. How will chavez be punished? He will find another customer. Yet I get my gas from 7eleven because its 2 blocks from my house and it's the cheapest in the area.

It might get cheaper because one of the reasons for the renegotiation was that Citgo's gas cost more on average than other suppliers.

7-11 was already in the process of dropping Citgo to sell their own brand of gas. *insert joke about chili nachos here*

The one they tried to tear down a few decades ago and met one of the largest public outcries in the cities recent history? The one that, when the asshat councilman suggested tearing it down, he got berated? Sorry, the Citgo sign is a landmark in Boston. It has been here for decades, and will outlast both the jackasses that are Bush and Chavez. No one I have ever talked to in the city, student or resident, supports the removal of that sign.

How sad, here I was hoping to read a news story about a 7-11 in S. America who had hired a preist and brought neighborhood convienence to a whole new level. I still watch and wait to see how increasingly faceless corporations will begin dealing with local religions.
On the actual story- Ok then. their business, their choice.

Heard as others have that this was in the works. However the news release also mentioned that 7-11 corp did not like and or agree with Thugo's speech.

I wouldn't worry about it. First of all, the sign is standard advertising space, iirc, owned by Citgo. Unless Boston, Mass, or the Feds passed a specific law against the sign, politics will have very little to do with it (Chavez would probably keep it as a big "piss off" to bush, if nothing else). There is no associated gas station (it is on top of the BU book store, actually), so it doesn't rely on a station to remain open for its existance. Also, the last time they considered getting rid of it, the historical society made them delay destruction because of public outcry, and they decided to keep the sign. It would be very easy for the historical society to make it a landmark officially. There is no question that there is plenty of support in the city.
