I actually at one point read the article that goes with that pic, apparently it's the one place that the sharks aren't agressive and if you just relax and stay still, let the shark check you out it will eventually move on. I am in no way willing to test that.

the only way I'd test it is to throw a baby in and see if he goes for it.

Sharks don't deliberately go for humans. Usually they mistake humans for seals, which is easy for them to do when the human is lying on a surfboard.

Yeah, sharks have a bad rep because they check stuff out with their most sensitive manipulative organ - their mouths. Unfortunately for the subject that organ is filled with several rows of razor sharp teeth.

Actually, sharks are fairly unaggressive unless you provoke them. People would be surprised if they knew exactly how many sharks are swimming about when they are out in the water.
Sharks are fairly curious creatures, and humans are a curiosity in the ocean. Most sharks won't attack a person, and only get up close to see what the hell that thing in the water is.

Hey now, I have a wierd fear of water. I don't like being in deep water at all, so yeah. Not gonna happen.
And I didn't say they never attack, it's just that they rarely attack. Sharks have ample oppurtunity to attack millions of people a year in the US. Only a handful are attack, and actually it is rare to die from an attack, because they sharks are only "testing" you out with their mouth. Once they figure out you are not their normal food(most sharks do not eat people), they let go. And the bites are generally "love taps" in shark term. You'll walk away with nasty cuts and laceration(razor sharp teeth will do that), but it's not likely to be a massacre or what not. And usually sharks don't even do that. It's quite rare to be "attacked" by a shark.

If you're careful, and have an expert around who knows what how to do it, petting a great is just about as dangerous as petting a dog. Actually, less so. Dogs attack more people per day than shark do in a year. So yeah.

That probably has a lot to do with teh number of people who actually come into contact with dogs, seeing as how they are in every other back yard all over the world and running around everywher because we like them. Also, being attacked by a dog is probably going to be a lot less life threatening for two reasons:
1. You're on land and can run and get to a doctor. If teh guy in the boat got bit, whetherthe shark was just curious or not, you can see that he has a long way to go after the shark severes several arteries with it's love bite.
2. The teeth of a canine tend to be a lot smaller, the mouth of a dog is a lot smaller and the jaws aren't as strong.

I hear this kind of nonsense from the surfers around here all the time. "Like, dude, you are way more likely to get hit by, like, a bus, or something then get bitten by a shark, man..."
Yeah...but you know what my odds are right now of getting bitten by a shark are? Zero. Why fuck with perfect?

The same thing is true if you word for word swap human and shark, despite the fact that man is the main predator of sharks. A shark runs into a dangerous human occasionally and a human runs into a dangerous shark occasionally.
Im not sure which sharks like the taste of humans and which do not. Unlike some people though I dont believe for a second the tired old bullshit of "all shark attacks are merely sharks misidentifying humans as seals". More like "many shark attacks are sharks correctly identifying a possible meal and checking the edibility" And while I dont care for the taste of most sharks and rays, threshers and Makos both taste great. Mmmmm, shark tacos!

Here is world renowned expert Andre Hartzman shortly after a great white shark bit him during a cage dive.
