Brazil.

The fact that you posted it was the crucial clue, but I did know (very roughly) that there was one approaching there.

I can make a very educated guess, knowing where your from.

edit: And be correct, it seems. I don't think it really counts though...

OK, Brazil it is.

But has there been any mention of a presidential election in one of the world's largest democracies (The same size in terms of population and land area as the USA) in your part of the world?

Nope. Of course not. Everyone knows that America is the only country in the world.

Seriously, though, there really hasn't been any mention I've heard. But then, I haven't been looking.

Honestly I would not have known without this thread, and I read a (very cheap) newspaper every day.

So you have discovered something you didn't know.

The world press tends to be too closed in on events in certain parts of the world (North America, Europe, Middle East mainly, and the occasional mention of Japan , China and NK). Obviously local events attract attention, as they should, but to simply not report on major events from over half the world is shameful.

What is the political position of the government in the world's largest democracy (real one that is - not China)?
What are the economic trends in Northern Africa?

etc.

(Wiki is omniscient - yes, but not all knowledge is necessarily truthful.)

So will Da Silva be reelected? The corruption scandals didn't affect him did they?

Just how much of a shift is expected in Congress??

So what is your take on the elections in Brazil?

Lula (PT - Left centre) will win the presidential election despite the last four years having been full of serious corruption scandals and such like.

However the Legislature - (both the senate and the house of representatives) will be right centre dominated (PMDB, PFL).

So we are in for four years of political gridlock and abuse of presidential decrees.

Politics here is too much a politics of personality rather than of policy. Voting is compulsory (a bad idea) and as such politicians spend all their time slagging off the opposition and trying to appear to be nice guys and gals. No one that I have spoken to has the faintest idea as to what the political platforms of the various parties are, with the possible exception of PT - Socialist and PCdoB - which is the Communist Party of Brazil, and even these the concept they have is of what the platform was 20+ years ago.

Are there any issues in particular that voters are concerned about, or is it just going to be mostly backlash from the corruption scandals that determines these elections?

What do you expect with such a patronising tone? I know you are a bright and erudite person, but you really do suffer from a failure to recognise that this is not a unique condition.

[start sarcasm]Wow, news reporting doesnt report as much as it leaves out, next revelation, rain tends to be wet....wow talk about eye-openers....[end sarcasm]

Really, the only implication I can derive from your patronising comment is that without your enlightening presence we plebs would be left swandering in our cesspools of ignorance. Since presumably you already knew this earthshatteringly obvious fact, yet think it's "BIG NEWS" to us ignoramiouses what other interpretation of your comment is there other than "hey look how big my head is"?

Not everyone knows so much less than your own good self....perhaps now you've learnt something.:p

Do you really have to take everything so seriously. A throwaway comment hurt you that much?

If you see me as being patronising, then so be it, but it was not my intent.

Any attack I was making was on the self centered nature of the Western world (I can't comment on the other parts of the world as I don't know - part of what I was trying to find out) not on you or any other individual.

Now you have obviously been so offended by this that you resort to personal attacks on me, based on nothing but your own very flimsy and unjustifiable folk psychology. However, from your comments it appears that you already know everything about everything, so you already knew that.

Whatever made you think it hurt? I found it patronizing and deserving of flippancy. So I was flippant. You commented on the flippancy so I explained the rational that motivated it.

If you see me as being patronising, then so be it, but it was not my intent.
If I thought it was your intent, I wouldnt have even bothered taking the time to point it out to you.

Any attack I was making was on the self centered nature of the Western world (I can't comment on the other parts of the world as I don't know - part of what I was trying to find out) not on you or any other individual.
Which is all fine and well, but it doesnt change the fact that you appear to expect that what you notice/realise/understand is beyond the intellect of others, else why would you expect what is apparent to you to be a discovery others only make if and when you assist them to?

Now you have obviously been so offended by this that you resort to personal attacks on me, based on nothing but your own very flimsy and unjustifiable folk psychology.
My comments are based on the only reasonable interpretation of your comments that I can conceive of. I'm not offended at all, rather I'm amused and also a little regretful. If you choose to percieve a personal attack rather than considering that there is some possibility my comments represent a genuine evaluation of your comments and the attitude that they indicate, then so be it. You can say I didnt try but you'd be wrong or lying.

However, from your comments it appears that you already know everything about everything, so you already knew that.
Nice try sweetie, but I happen to know that I dont know nearly so much as there is to know.

Your tone was patronizing, either you care about your ability to relate to people without risking offence (and I know some people really dont take kindly to being patronized; I rather expect you are one such person yourself) or not. I've done my bit to let you know, what you choose to do about that (or dont choose to do) is up to you.
