I just thought I would have a quick look at the future of the world by looking at who might be running for the 2008 US Presidential Elections.
I appreciate its 2 years away and that most candidates are unlikely to throw their hat into the ring till late next year I figured there might be some sort of idea about who might be putting their hand up. On the wikipedia site there were a whole lot of polls and the name that came up the most often as winning these polls was a John McCain. (admittedly a lot of them are fox news polls but other polls seemed to reflect similar outcomes) So I had a look at his reference on wiki.. seemed like the major thing he has done was be involved in the US being allowed to legally and retrospectively torture people for info after himself being tortured and giving false info under the pain of that torture.
Keeping in mind that I live in Australia and don't know an awful lot about US politics I thought I might ask the question here. What else is he about? I mean surely if he comes out on top of all these polls he must have a pretty good rap... what is it? Why is he so popular?

John McCain is the guy who should have been the Republican candadate in 2000 before Bush's dirty tricks team got hold of him.

For the torture thing he did sell out to Bush on his "compromise" on the torture issue though he is hardly on Bush's side on the issue. Political expediency I believe it is called. Besides that, as far as I can tell anyway, he is a decent sort for a Republican.

McCain is a republican with a basic sense of decency. That's truly a rare find. The compromise was bullshit, though, and makes me think he's unlikely to run now.

McCain is one of the few politicians who makes me think that he might have a few wisps of integrity left.

Maybe.

A republican which adheres too basic decency. Thats a rare find. Only 95% of republicans are sympathetic too decency.

He would be a VERY strong candidate. He is a moderate republican. Attractive too most soft core right and left wingers. He is sympathetic too civil rights, but endorses a strong, free market. Libertarian, almost. He could swing ALOT of independant votes his way.

His records pretty clean, and he was a war hero, thats always a plus.

Sounds good. So what is it that he has done that suggests his decency?
Is he mostly financially/socially or environmently focussed?
I am guessing he would be a step up from Bush in the intellect stakes but is he likely to be just as much of a warmonger given his military background?

Ya, does he give a toss about the environment, or is the market going to "solve" that one for us too?

Sorry perhaps warmonger was too strong a word.
Just that from an outsider's point of view Bush has seemed to favour (rightly or wrongly) a military approach to a lot of forgein affairs situations. I was just wondering if Mr John McCain had showed any signs of following in the same vent.

Uh, your probably thinking of the Geneva convention definition debate going on. McCains bill passed.... I think Bush is trying too dodge it by re-defining, or specifying on artilce 3.

Nope they changed it in that closed door session, I'm not blaming him but the tourture bill was altered a great deal from what it was.
The compromise gave Bush th eright to interpert it how he wanted, but supposedly gave suspects better chances for trial, however if you check out the article cited in the "Don't piss of Bush", or something like that thread it looks like that was a bunch of bull or that they are trying to pass another bill that would effectively allow the president to ignore Habius Corpus.

John McCain is a man who couldn't figure out the difference between the Missile Launch Control of his Fighter and the Ignition sequences. The guy almost blew up the USS Constelation.
