Jesus Freak

Song by DC Talk

Separated, I cut myself clean
From a past that comes back in my darkest of dreams
Been apprehended by a spiritual force
And a grace that replaced all the me I've divorced

I saw a man with tat on his big fat belly
It wiggled around like marmalade jelly
It took me a while to catch what it said
Cause I had to match the rhythm
Of his belly with my head
"Jesus saves!" is what it raved in a typical tattoo green
He stood on a box in the middle of the city
And claimed he had a dream

(chorus)
What will people think
When they hear that I'm a Jesus freak?
What will people do when they find that its true?
I dont really care if they label me a Jesus freak
There ain't no disguising the truth

Kamikaze, my death is gain
Ive been marked by my maker
A peculiar display
The high and lofty, they see me as weak
Cause I won't live and die for the power they seek

There was a man from the desert with naps in his head
The sand that he walked was also his bed
The words that he spoke made the people assume
There wasn't too much left in the upper room
With skins on his back and hair on his face
They thought he was strange by the locusts he ate
The Pharisees tripped when they heard him speak
Until the king took the head of this Jesus freak

(repeat chorus 2x)

People say I'm strange, does it make me a stranger
That my Best Friend was born in a manger?
People say I'm strange, does it make me a stranger
That my Best Friend was born in a manger?

(repeat chorus 2x)

What will people think?
What will people think?
What will people do?
What will people do?
I dont really care
What else can I say
There ain't no disguising the truth
Jesus is the way

Really? I thought somebody would have something to say. I don't even care if it's against it. Well, I do care, but I would prefer hearing "I hate this" to hearing nothing.

The song was well produced, i'll hand them that. (i've heard the actual song, it's kind of a lame, mediocre and predictable hard rock song with a christian twist).

Meh, it's not worth my hate. There are people selling kids into prostitution in the world. One little song by one little Christian band doesn't compare.

How is it pointless? I gave an idea (in this case, contained in a song) and asked what you think of the idea.

can you summarise the idea in a few words then. i find the sense of ideas gets completely incomprehensible when put into song lyrics. plus songs are probably the longest winded method for transmitting ideas. apart from epic poems i suppose.

Apparently, no. That's why people by mindless music from pseudo-pop artists who can't be arsed to write about something important.

Or, as Good Clean Fun put it:

I never thought I'd see the day
When church kids chose the hardcore way
And I expected quite a fight: punk rock vs the Christian right
So now I wonder what went wrong,
the hymnal has the perfect song
You picked a bible, and now you're gone

So if you're waiting for judgment day
Or if you're waiting to get paid
It's all the same, it's just two different ways to pray
That we don't need, don't want your fairy tales or greed
The scene is strong and we're still gone be here when you're gone

I never thought I'd see a time, when punk rock was the party line
Believe me it was quite a shock
When underground turned corporate rock
I'd never thought of selling out, money's not what this is about
Then we saw the bottom line
We said, "it's a deal! Where do we sign?"

Cut out "Punk Rock" and replace it with "rock", and you get my sentiments.

He dosn't care about what other people think of him being a Jesus freak so he is trying to get people to say what they think of him being a Jesus freak, is his idea, I believe.

Basically that they will follow Jesus no matter what label, ridicule, or trial is put upon them.

No. I do consider myself a Jesus Freak, yes. But I just wanted to know what was thought of the idea in the song, the idea of making a song about being a Jesus freak, or anything else relating to the song!

I really think a lot of you are making this overly complicated.

No, everything in your world pales when you consider the salvation of souls. To me it's kind of boring. Everyone isn't you and everyone doesn't share your interests. Having said that, I suppose each of us posts something we think is important from time to time only to have it ignored. That's life. Sometimes we bore each other, sometimes we enrage each other, and sometimes we even succeed in making each other laugh.

I thought that your ideas were contained in the song; that the song you represented your beliefs.

I don't care if someone decides to follow Jesus or not follow Jesus, wherever he is going.

Then, if it bores you, don't read it. And I wasn't asking about the idea only. I was also asking about the idea of the idea being made into a song, the idea of contemporary Christian music in general. Really, I just sked for thoughts. I didn't say what the thoughts had to be about, though it would be nice if they had something to do with the OP.

I can see that this thread didn't stir as much discussion as I had hoped. A lot of you assumed that it had to be a discussion about Jesus (Which if you're a Christian, everything comes back to Him in some way.) when that really wasn't the point.

Anyway, it's nearly dead, and I'm not trying to save it. I just wanted to point out that the intent wasn't what a lot of people thought it was.

I have to profess ignorance, I didn't know the song until I downloaded it just then.

Meh. Lyrics aside, it's pretty standard late 90's-sounding rock with a bit of rap, but not the worst i've heard. The first 10 seconds sounded promising, though.

Trouble are Christians, aren't they? I'm not positive, but they do use a lot of religious imagery in their songs.
