use the other thread i guess

normally it wouldnt bother me that an opera got canceled

i wouldnt have even cared a slight bit. but the reasoning here brings up a good question of how our society is going to change in order to keep peace.

http://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/europe/09/27/berlin.opera.ap/index.html

its an opera being cancelled because some are worried it will upset muslims.

After its premiere in 2003, the production by Hans Neuenfels drew widespread criticism over a scene in which King Idomeneo presents the severed heads not only of the Greek god of the sea, Poseidon, but also of Mohammed, Jesus and Buddha

funny how it is only the muslims they are worrying about offending. the opera seems to equally portray prophet/prophet like people from greek mythology, Christianity, and Buddhism.

It's ok, important issue. Really pathetic too. Just giving in because they are afraid of offending people and that those offended people MIGHT decide to get really pissed and, what, bomb the opera? It is caving in to extremists when there wasn't even a problem to begin with.

I've never seen Idomeneo, but isn't it about the King of Crete at the time of the Trojan War? So, how could there be a Muslim character for anyone to get upset about, even if the guy's name is Mohammed (though Mozart and his librettist could write whatever they wanted, I suppose)? I just hope they don't plan on doing The Abduction from the Seraglio, fatwahs will be flying everywhere.

because the point of the opera is to temper religion with reason. At the end the severed heads of Posiedon, Jesus, Bhudda and Muhammed are all presented. When teh Greeks hear about this they'll be blowing up discos and trains all over Europe.
