... the deluge?

So I caught a tidbit in yesterdays paper that Perez Musharraf was in to see a doc unannounced in Paris Texas, of all places. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/14975346/

It wa ssupposedly routine tests, but I don't belive that at all.
Anywho, it's got me thinking - if he dies, be it natural, "natural", or assassination, who's next and what effect will it have?

Nobody has even a thought to add regarding the possibility of the death of a man who barely holds off a nuclear weapons state from falling into the hands of Talibanesque militant Islamisist?

People the man is only out of the country a few days and already theres speculation that he's dying and that he's been over thrown.

He will eventually die or be overthrown, lets stick to the point of the thread: what happens when this occurs.

I assume the US will prop up whichever generals are least-islamist.

But, maybe Hamid Gul will get power ;)

We actually have very good relations with India so we may pull an Iraq/Iran type of deal like we did in the 80s. Keep 'em focused on each other and not on us.

I would think that the US should already have groomed a successor for such scenarios. There are plenty of generals in the very top heavy Pak army to choose from.

It will have no effect in ground realities. Same drama, different actor.

It is the institution - the army - that is the problem, not the figurehead. All Pak dictators (Ayub, Yahya, Zia, Musharraf, the next one) can easily pass for each others in terms of policies, worldview etc.

Well, depending upon who it winds up being, I'd imagine counter-force airstrikes against the Pakistani nuclear arsenal are popular, espescially if it's an Islamist group with close ties to either Iran or the Taliban.
