What say you? If Goldwater were alive and running for the presidency today, would you vote for him? Why or why not?

If I were sure the rest of the Grand Old Party shared his ideals, maybe. But they don't.

I would, but I don't think the Republicans would pick him up, he's considered to be a "liberal" Conservative by today Neo-Con. standards, so he may run as Libertarian!

My 4th grad teacher (Mrs. Cannon) might have made an excelent Sec. Def., but not a pres. 5th Grade Mrs. Selman would have made a great First Lady...

I don't like his views. He's too McCarthyist for my taste.

Imagine if they did run him. (After all the current polling front runner John McCain is AgH2O lite...)

And yes, Barry knew he was the "libereal" wing. He famously said as much to Dole in '96.

Early incarnation I'd tend to agree. Later incarnation, no.

True, but I don't really see the Republican running a "liberal" Conservative, (although he was the father of Modern Conservatism). So, if Mr. Goldwater was to run today, he'd probably run as a Libertarian.

Err... you'd really vote for either the Bill and Opus option or Goldwater? Your advocacy of a hyper-Xian agenda makes me sceptical of either...

I voted no, though I was tempted to go Meadow party.

Barry Goldwater, despite social stands I very much appreciate and laud, was still too economically conservative for my tastes. I think it's a good thing that we have safety nets for the old and infirm, and wish they were even broader, on the scale of most European nations.

But I sure wish more current Republicans--any current Republicans on the national scale--were like him. He was a Republican I could respect. There's not a single national Republican worthy of carrying his jockstrap right now.

I would vote for Goldwater before I would vote for a lot of people. But I would also vote for a lot of people before I would vote for Goldwater.

And Bill and Opus was the joke option, one of the few I liked, so I just want to put my support behind that joke option. I would never have voted for them in real life. Unless the other option was Hitler.

While there's some stuff I like about him, and he's solid gold compared to current so-called conservatives, there's just too much about him I don't like.

The anti-union stuff. The pro-nuclear bomb stuff. The anti-civil rights stuff.

Those are all deal breakers for me. He's like a chocolate suffle with ground up broken glass. Yes, chocolate suffle is really really nice. But not worth it.

Well, the options are protracted conventional war LBJ, or brief nuclear war Goldwater.

At least afterwards LBJ did a good thing by making us, briefly, realize that trying to wage wars to impose our view of governance on the rest of the world was a bad idea.

But yeah. Which is worse? Occaisionally some innocent child blows off a leg by stepping on a land mine, or the general population suffers from decades of radiation sickness?

His stance on nukes was spun to maximum political damage by Johnson. The entire campaign, espescially the damnable daisy commercial, was totally untrue.

Well, I don't think Johnson ever intended to argue that Goldwater was in favor of nuking little girls who pick flowers. Are you saying that Goldwater wasn't in favor of using nuclear weapons against countries that posed no threat to us?

I would. Although only if I get to pick the modern one, the very early one is questionable.

But finding decent politicians is difficult, especially in the US. He's certainly one of the best I have heard of.

In light of the comments on his hypthetically advanced age: I'd still vote for him, but only if he was willing to have his brain removed and impanted into a robot in order for him to live forever. Or at least long enough to finish a second term.

A little too trigger happy on the nukes for my taste, inflammatory Johnson ads aside. I shudder to think what his reaction to something on the scale of 9/11 would be, were it to ever happen during his presidency.

Yes. I would most definately vote for him.

I concur with Free shepmagans.

In fact, I've read one of his books (Been a while, I think it was his autobiography) and was very much surprised by his political and social stances. My Grandmother always talked about him, but I genuinely believe that, were he alive and running in '08, he'd be a damn good thing for this country. Especially now.

Sorry, should have made that clear - I'm assuming he's fit and of approriate age.

Don't get this show here, so that'd be a no.
