What Car would you buy?
Neu Leonstein

I'm bored. Time to make a thread about cars.
Here is the deal: I post a number of price ranges, and you post which car you would buy in it. You only get to pick one...that's the hard part. Then, hopefully, someone will savagely attack your choice and we'll have an argument on our hands. And it can be a used or classic car, if you want. It can even be a bike or a truck, if you're that way inclined.
Section 1:
< US$15,000, €12,000, £9000, A$20,000
My pick
A B5 Audi A4 with engine mods and Kerscher bodykit. Sorta like this:
http://www.kerscher-tuning.de/images/dynpic.php?file=L2hvbWUva2Vyc2NkY3ovd3d3LmtlcnNjaGVyLXR1bmluZy5kZS8va2Fyb3NzZXJpZS9ncmFmaWtlbi9hdWRp L2F1ZGlfYTRfYjVfaGVja19obF81MDAuanBn
Section 2:
Up to US$45,000, €35,000, £24,000, A$60,000
My pick
Mitsubishi Evo IX - I don't care about questionable interior quality, nor about the dodgy looks. I do know however that this is one of the fastest "real-world" vehicles around. It'll scare the living shit out of anyone. It'll make delivering pizzas a whole new experience.
Section 3:
Up to US$90,000, €70,000, £48,000, A$120,000
My pick
A used 996 Porsche GT3. I might have to shop around for a bit to find a good one, but if I do (http://www.carsales.com.au/pls/carsales/!cs_content.dealer_vehicle?vehicle_id=2557345¤t_rec=2&total_rec=9&sort_type=3&make_id=48&keyword=GT3&search_distance=25)...look out world. :p
http://images.carsales.com.au/dealer/carsales/3370947.jpg
Section 4: Unlimited funds. Yay!
My pick
That's difficult, there is many an awesome car out there. Perhaps surprisingly, I pick the Lamborghini Gallardo (rather than the Murcielago LP640, which I love also, but isn't practical enough for every day use). I'll drive it every day, everywhere. I'll deliver pizzas in it. I'll love it more than any human. :D

cos all i want in a car is something that can get me from A to B in relative comfort and ease. i'd just pocket the spare money left over at the higher price-levels ;) :D (it costs about £16k new iirc)

Answers change from moment to moment, this is now. (redone because forum collapse ate my response...)
Section 1:
< US$15,000,
A Triumph TR-3 (http://www.thefreewheelers.net/images/autos/carshow2001/large/1962_Triumph_TR-3B.jpg). It's just damn classy.
That's providing I can't find a good Porsche 914-6 (http://www.allsportauto.com/photoautre2/porsche/914/6/1970_porsche_914_6_17_m.jpg)
Section 2:
Up to US$45,000,
Here I'm saving a bit of money and get me a early model Porsche 930 (http://www.porschemania.it/evoturbo/P201.jpg). The untamed beast.
That is, again, providing I can't find a Porsche 914-6 GT (http://mk23.image.pbase.com/u7/9146gt/large/22201927.9146GTOrange72dpi.jpg) at that price, probably couldn't...
Section 3:
Up to US$90,000
I'm going to cheat here a little and use the money saved from the last section and get a car that satisfies my sports car side and my dirty hippie side, and get a Tesla Sports Car (http://www.teslamotors.com/index.php?js_enabled=1). Basicly an electric Elise. I'm all about it.
Section 4: Unlimited funds. Yay!
I'm going to have to go with a Porsche 904 GTS (http://www.clearlight.com/~aei/brawicz/pebble-beach/Porsche904GTS-f.JPG) Last of the streetable race cars. I missed the pure club racer days, the cars where all you needed was a set of tires and your street car was a race car.

Section 2:
Up to US$45,000, €35,000, £24,000, A$60,000
I'd actually save some cash with this choice; A new Mustang GT. I'd use the rest of the money to add on some lighter wheels and a blower. Gotta have a blower.
Section 3:
Up to US$90,000, €70,000, £48,000, A$120,000
One of three cars; A new Corvette C7 Z06, a Split-window 1963 Corvette, or a 1970 Plymouth Hemi Cuda in Plum Crazy. Assuming you can actually find either of the second two cars for that little.
Section 4: Unlimited funds. Yay!

All class, I saw a '33 Talbot Lago go for $3.25 million last year at the Monterey Historics, it was gorgous. We happened to be around when it cruised by.
My grandpa had a boattail Auburn, but my grandma tree'd it.

Yeah, they crafted cars with style back then. You ever been to the Auburn Museum in Indiana? I have to carry a towel and a bucket when I've gone because I tend to drool at all those rolling artworks.

Ok here is my $.02
First section- Honda Civic. Reason - The absolutely huge array of aftermarket performace products, but who are we kidding it is still a Civic.
Section 2 - Dodge Charger SRT8. I know it isn't exactly PC, but nothing gets your juices flowing like a car with an agressive stance, a growling exaust note, and insane acceleration, all in a vehichle you can cart your family around in. Oh, and can you say Hemi?
Section 3 - The new 'Vette is hard to beat there but I think the Cadillac CTS-V would be more practical.
Section 4 - This is hard but a Maybach 57s would do the trick...

From behind the wheel of a Veyron, France is the size of a small coconut. I cannot tell you how fast I crossed it the other day. Because you simply wouldn’t believe me. I also cannot tell you how good this car is. I just don’t have the vocabulary. I just end up stammering and dribbling and talking wide-eyed nonsense. And everyone thinks I’m on drugs.
This car cannot be judged in the same way that we judge other cars. It meets drive-by noise and emission regulations and it can be driven by someone whose only qualification is an ability to reverse round corners and do an emergency stop. So technically it is a car. And yet it just isn’t.
Other cars are small guesthouses on the front at Brighton and the Bugatti is the Burj Al Arab. It makes even the Enzo and the Porsche Carrera GT feel slow and pointless. It is a triumph for lunacy over common sense, a triumph for man over nature and a triumph for Volkswagen over absolutely every other car maker in the world.
One can dream...

If anyone would bring one here, it'd be a waste. Not only does the government hate cars, but I have grown convinced that there is something in the mother milk in this country that makes people think that one buys a BMW M3 only for the prestige.
In short, it would forever remain in some garage. I went to the Brisbane motor show a while ago, and Lindsey Fox's Ferrari Collection was sitting there. I mean, it was nice to look at an F40, F50 and Enzo side by side...but I was disgusted with the fact that none of them had number plates, and none of them were being thrashed out on the road.

Section 1: that '69 Olds Cutlass 350 I should have.
Section 2: A '68 Mustang GT.
Section 3: A 440 Six-Pack E-Body Mopar.
Section 4: A '65 Shelby Cobra competition model. The very reason the UK has speed limits.
Section 2 - Dodge Charger SRT8. I know it isn't exactly PC, but nothing gets your juices flowing like a car with an agressive stance, a growling exaust note, and insane acceleration, all in a vehichle you can cart your family around in. Oh, and can you say Hemi?
New Charger doesn't have a Hemi. Only a '66-'71.

Arrg, people with money but no sense annoy me.
Doesn't Australia have like a 900 mile long road without a speed limit? I seem to remember a magazine taking a 911 Twin Turbo out there and jammin' it at a buck eighty the whole way.
At his museum in Melbourne, he employs someone to drive each car in turn, to keep them in running order. That'd be a cool job. :)
Yes, yes it would.
Lucky bastard! I haven't seen one in the flesh, I don't think any have been imported into Aus (or ever will be either).
Those two where actually the second and third I saw. The first I saw was going the other way on the freeway. I was going to come around and see if I could catch up to it, but I looked at the opposing on ramp and an Elise was hauling ass to catch up with it and I knew as soon as the guy in the Bugatti saw the Elise it was going to be a bit of 'game on' and there wouldn't be a prayer of seeing either in my pokey VW van...

they aren't all like that. The guy that owns Chezoom, uses it as a daily driver.
But yeah, I don't understand people who buy a car then put it on display. Drive the damned thing already!
Thats why I chose a caterham for option 3 They are so ugly you have to get behind the wheel to not suffer eye strain from viewing them but by all accounts a dream to drive and light enough to embarass things with far more power.

Daimler-Chrysler is calling the new engine a Hemi, whether or not it is a true hemispherical head is rather irrelevant.

Most of the highways in the Northern Territory have unrestricted speed limits, but that's the only place in Aus that does. All the other states are limited to 100-120 km/h, depending on the road & the state, and they're vigourously enforced by police & speed cameras. Besides, the NT is more than 2000km from Melbourne. I've only been there once, a couple of years ago, but I managed to push my little Pug 306 to over 200 km/h on a nice flat, straight stretch of road.

there is no car i would want to buy and have to own and maintain or indenture myself to pay someone else to maintain.
i would far and away prefer to live where transportation was small scale, ran on guideways, and free to ride or nearly so, and where population didn't have to be insanely dense for it to be.
this is one of the reasons i started cameroi.

Chasing a Veyron in Veronica! :D I love it. :)
She doesn't catch much. But on the twisty first few miles of Highway 9 I'm able to use local familiarity, a practiced nack for maintaining momentum and a little bit of good ol' driving experience to fill a few mirrors with red and white. Sometimes you can see the frustration and embarrassment of the other driver when they can't seem to shake an old Type II bus. Especially when they hit the rare 'straight' sections and I get out powered and yet catch back up when the road knots. It's almost more satisfying than nailing that road in something proper.
Which is not to say I wouldn't giggle with glee like a schoolgirl if I had the oportunity to hit that road in a Lotus Super 7...(I know the Caterham is basicly the same car but gradually improved, I'm a sucker for the vintage...)

I don't know man, this is one of those rare cases where I'm going to have to disagree with you, because that looks like a Lancer Evo, which I've never thought looked anything other than pedestrian. And while I think that it's ridiculous in todays oil climate for American car companies to re-introduce the muscle car, I think the new Camaro is the best looking Camaro since the original, it has that pony car street scrapper look to it, like it's itching for a fight. That's good muscle car bully good looks. If I where to buy one of those monstrosities the Camaro would be on the top of the list by a long shot.
Especially if they kept the retro-style dash fro the show car.

I have to say that I think the HSV looks pretty good. I don't like the front grill/splitter treatment, but I think the rest of it, lights, wheel arches, proportions, etc are pretty good. I wouldn't buy one either, but I think it's a pretty decent car.

I think it's the grill and rear spoiler that make it look like an econo-box come racer. If it had a better grill treatment it would do wonders for the car.

That was the best! Before I did a race mod on the car I refused to put slicks on it on principle and you could so easily glide that car around turns and then gently flick it into the next. It made the replays a thing of beauty. They where the only ones I would watch other than the TVR Griffith which was dialed so tight that it highlighted a flaw in the games physics-it would literally tip its inside tires in the air and go through the turn leaned like that at a 45 degree angle. It was hilarious to watch.

I know what you mean. I like the way you can have a hotted up version of the family car, and they're usually pretty good value for money because of it.
On the other hand, there's nothing like a car that's been purposely designed from the beginning to be good to drive. It's almost always going to be a better handling device, because there were less engineering compromises made along the way.

I never really got into the replays. The only ones I would watch were when I'd get the perfect drift through a corner, or I'd do some outrageous slide, but somehow manage to catch it, or if I'd have a spectacular lose.
Then I'd save it to show my brother later on. :p

VW Rabbit?

They're trying to rekindle the old image of the Rabbit in the US. When it was called a Rabbit here it was the ulitmate in-expensive car, it was economical, well built, and still actually fun to drive. As of late Volkswagen has had a misguided attempt to move up market and now they're trying to go back to thier old image of cheap reliable cars that are fun to drive, so they go back to the name Rabbit.
And really, in all honesty, is it really that much worse than the name "Golf?" I mean, really? At least Rabbit implies something correct about the car, small, light, rapid, um...mulitlies...

Yeah, a bit heavier, but apparently still awesome.
