The fact that guest workers are in Europe came up in discussion about immigration to the US awhile back. But I'm curious about European guestworkers. Where do most come from, what jobs do they do, are they paid well, and how does one become a guest worker? Any insight into this?

Speaking for the UK, guest workers fill two prominent roles:
- manual labour, such as construction (jobs British people no longer want) - from the Accession countries like Poland
- squeezing out young British players in county cricket sides - from South Africa, by way of a Norwegian great-grandmother's parrot or whatever.
