Chavez=Falwell?

By now, of course, everyone knows the story of how Hugo Chavez referred to Bush as the Devil at the UN last week. Crossed himself, said it smelled of sulfur, blah blah blah.

The right-wing was outraged, of course, while the Democratic response was anywhere from outraged to bemused to full-scale agreement.

But it seems he's not the only one making that sort of statement. Jerry Falwell, who, like Bush, was born with a silver foot in his mouth, referred to Hillary Clinton as, you guessed it, the Devil (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060924/ap_on_el_pr/falwell_hillary_clinton;_ylt=AnhgX31eMl.8695fkSx3I12M5QcF;_ylu=X3oDMTBjMHVqMTQ4BHNlYwN5bnN1YmNhdA--)
"I certainly hope that Hillary is the candidate," Falwell said at a breakfast session Friday in Washington. "I hope she's the candidate, because nothing will energize my (constituency) like Hillary Clinton," he said. "If Lucifer ran, he wouldn't."
He claims, of course, that it was all tongue in cheek, which is code for, he got caught and didn't expect to be.

But... but... but don't you SEE???! It's DIFFERENT when an American says it!

Well, in defence of the guy, he didn't straight out compare Hillary to the devil. He just said she'd get less votes.
Which still is almost as bad, but there still is a difference.

It was funny when Chavez said it because national leaders, much less socialist ones, don't usually say things like that. It was also funny because of bush's very loudmouthed 'christianity.'

Falwell on the other hand is a bona-fide member of the christianist taliban, an enemy of the constitution, &c., and meant it.

Chávez: Democratically-elected leftist leader attacking a murderous war criminal.

Falwell: Reactionary fundamentalist attacking a Senator merely complicit in warmongering, and whom he dislikes for reasons that have nothing to do with that complicity.

Sorry, I don't see the similarity.

Ahh, another Falwell half-ass apology just like his anti-Jewish statements and other hatemongering...hell, I don't like Chavez but at least he has the balls to stand behind his statements.

Meh. Chavez has a diplomatic responsibility to refrain from such hyperbole. Falwell is irrelevant.

The difference is Hillary is the devil. She would be lucky to get 30% of the vote in a general election as well.

She'd do far better than that. She might lose, depending on the opponent, but she'd do better than her husband did in terms of the popular vote.

She's a populist. Of course she'd do well.

I really doubt it. I'd like to think the American people are smarter than that.

She's been demonized on one side and as a result, idolized by the other. As a result, her appeal lies with the extreme on one side and her biggest opposition would come from the other extreme. It would all depend on her appeal to the moderate voters, but as another poster has said, she is a populist and has spent a lot of time on feel-good measures like video game legislation. I think she could do fairly well, just not quite as well as her husband did.

You do have to admit, whatever the outcome, that would be one hell of an election.

Where's the left-wing idolization of Hillary Clinton?

It doesn't exist yet, but if she ran I'm sure that she'd get a following pretty quickly. I'm counting on the "if they don't like her then she must be great" mentality of the extreme on one side here. Kind of like a knee-jerk reaction, they'll love the person they're ideological opponents hate. I see Newton's Third Law as applicable in politics in general, and more so in election years when polarizing forces in the parties get stronger.

Chavez is a commando paratrooper and falwell is a fatassed pederast slob.

It should be "how fast could chavez kill falwell with his bare hands."

I don't buy the "If a Republican(why the hell do we let the behavior of Republicans decide how we can act?) can do it, then a world leader can do it too" arguement. This isnt a partisan disagreement...anyone with some sense of maturity should not tolerate bad fart jokes(smells like sulfur? cmon) in the UN General Assembly even if it was Mother Theresa. Isn't it possible that calling anyone the Devil is wrong, no matter who the person is?

Funny... I was just reading something like this on Kos. :p

I think that it's all rather silly and hyperbolic and that everyone needs to take a step back and a deep breath.

Chavez is a clown. He could say the sky was blue, and must sane humans would immediately know it was green. It's as simple as that. This whole kerfluffle is wasteful and silly. Ignore him and he'll lose his world podium.

Yeah--Pelosi and Conyers, among others, blasted Chavez for the remarks. Other, most notably not elected officials, ranged from dismissal of Chavez to support. Hell, one of the resident wingnuts around here started a whole damn thread quoting people from DU, so I'd say the range I posited was a correct one.

Remember, her husband maxed out at something like 43% the popular vote. As divided as this country is between the two major parties, she'd come close to that without campaigning.
