what did you do today?

to change the world? to make a difference?

We all come on here (okay not all of us, but a lot) and whine and moan, and complain about how the world is.......

I don't think much is going to change if we don't get out and do something.

Now, I am fully aware that my call to action is well, counterproductive, since most of you want to do uberbad stuff LOL to change the world.

So, no action!

now....

what did you do today to change the world? this week? this month? this year?

come one, come all <----- totally not sexual.

Heck, I barely did anything to prepare for the test I have tomarrow and the paper I have due Tuesday let alone anything constructive. To busy wasting time here, I'm thinking I might have to try at another temporary hiatus from here for a few months for schools sake.:(

To change the world? nothing. To change my world, I cleaned house, did laundry, made lentil soup, fed chicken scraps to the feral cats in my back yard, went to lunch with my daughter, showed my house to prospective buyers, and made some pithy comments on the forums about responsibility and politics.

All in all, a pleasant day.

I think that going to lunch with your daughter absolutely could change the world at some point, being that you are a very cool person and if you pass anything on to her she could in turn do something uber-great.

Not much. Student Health is closed on Sundays, so I have to deal with not getting quarantined tomorrow.

Thanks.

I think my daughter is already uber-great. She did 7 years in the Navy and is now completing her Master's degree in Public Health specializing in Epidemiology.

Sunday? Nothing much.

Friday and Saturday I partisapated (read I got kidnapped) in my local fall festivals for the equinox. I helped carry the protable shrine up the mountain for one shrine and showed up at the other to view the dancing to say thank you for the rather bountiful harvest this year. I also got to chat with a lot of my students who wanted to teach me about Japanese matsuri, so I guess I fullfilled the internationalization part of my contract and helped change the world a bit by showing my kids that Americans like matsuri just as much as they do, even if they refuse to eat squid on a stick.

Today though, today I change the world. Today I infulance the future in ways that I will never know, or even have a clue about, but will have an effect. Today I am at work teaching my students.

What better way to change or effect the world than to teach those who will come to own it?

What did I do today?

Argued with a guy who has no idea how to save money, or even spend it wisely..

I think that ended with me calling him white trash, telling him to get a job and stop living off welfare checks he shouldn't be getting..

Is it mean to say "It must be nice living below the poverty line"?

Today? I don't think I did anything....I tithed, but I don't think that counts as action since I do that anyway.

This week? I gave about 300lbs of food to the local homeless shelter/soup kitchen and I gave away my living room furniture, but I don't think that has much of an impact

I think I am going to do something big tomorrow....

oh, I do the teaching gig though, that's good right?

This is just an opinion, for what it's worth, but I don't think we have to "do something big", we just have to do something.

When I was an active Catholic, I headed the Social Justice Committee at the church. I thought I was wasting time if I didn't fill every minute that I wasn't at work with Hunger Walks, Lenten soup suppers, Christmas basket distribution, and so on. I wore myself out and didn't accomplish that much. I decided I would be much more effective if I didn't overextend myself (and my budget) and did things that were smaller, more personal and, hence, more meaningful. So, $20 to Katrina victims here, a thousand books and magazines to the public library there (yep, that's right - I cleaned out the house and found that I had a thousand books that I would never read again), a kind word to an annoying neighbor, I feel better and I think I'm more effective than if I really were trying to change the whole world and not just improve my little corner of it.

you are right, I tend to get way too involved in things that are bad for me....like trying to come up with a plan to do something uber big to change the world.

maybe my teaching gig is enough.... for now.

Had food poisoning, as I have done for the last week or so. Except for Friday, when I managed to do an interview with ITN (UK national news) regarding my reaction to this. (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/hampshire/5362926.stm)

Well today, my mom left for church early without me, and my dad was sick so he told me to drive to church by myself. I didn't really want to, so I just had breakfast somewhere and came to church when mass was ending and told my mom she didn't see me because I sat in the back.:) Oh yeah and I studied for my chem test.

Does my research count? Any medical application of it is probably at least a decade away, but the purpose is to advance medicine...

I do what I can. I really hesitate to go into detail as I don't donate my time to causes so I can SAY I do. I donate my time because I agree with the cause and I feel I OUGHT to do something and because I have a skill to offer.

I'm a professional wacko. If I didn't make money being a wacko, I would probably still be a ranked amateur. There are only two things I've ever really been good at: Mathematics and entertaining people.

I donate my time to my town, especially the library and to a nearby children's hospital.

Went to school and scanned some maps of North, Central and South America in order to make some worksheets so I can prepare for a geography quiz, read some articles on globalization and state sovereignty, read a newspaper article on how the war in Iraq is making terrorism worse, bought a copy of Political Science Quarterly (Fall 2006).

Just a few more steps on the path toward world dominatio....graduation.
