Tornado

Welcome to life in South Missouri. Woke up to a clear day today, bout' noon we got alot of clouds then a heckuva storm. half-hour ago some RA (Resident assistant, im in a dorm right now) came by and told me that my dorm room is to be used as a shelter for the one above me. The tornado sirens have been on and off but its been a while since I heard the last one so I guess im in the clear for now. I write when im nervous and that thing below is just something I wrote a few mins ago. Anyway. I was wondering if anybody had any tips, tornado stories, or even good pics about tornadoes?

As the sirens cry on like banshees,
Into the formidable sky,
And the discarded leaves of autumn,
Dance to the brothers that still live above,
Till the wind that gives them their steps,
Rips down more partners to join in the fray,
The trees begin to bow,
And the grass begins to wave,
As yet another player,
drops onto the green-laden stage.
An aerialist! While lacking in in grace,
Abound in presence and technique and strength,
Each step that she takes,
adds her kin to her lead,
and each note that she bellows,
silences each other voice.
she dips and she whirls and she spins and she stomps,
The landscape is brought to its knees,
And with her dance completed,
She leaves without a goodbye,
Just a whisper in the wind, and the casualties of art,
That lie in respect.
But of course, its all in my head
As the sirens cry on like banshees
into the formidable sky.

I just came up from the basement after learning that the local warning has been lifted, but it may come back. This is like a day in that one week in Chicago where it was severe storms everyday.

Hey Montacanos,

thank you for sharing your poem. I enjoyed reading it very much!

As for good stories, I'm glad to say that while tornadoes are not completely unknown in Germany, they are fairly uncommon. The only time I got into anything close was a hurricane warning when I was in NC and the whole school (small school, mind you) huddled in the hallway of the only brick building we had close by. We spend about 2 hours there instead of Math and French, while the wind and rain stayed outside. Makes me appreciate concrete as a building material ;)

[You know I couldn't resist when you asked about a picture...]

I'm right in the middle of Tornado Alley. In the last 110 years OKC has been hit in 105 of those years.

I picture googled for tornado and found it on page 23 (yes, I'm very patient when it comes to finding the right smiley - that's my secret!)

I can only wish I were able to produce images and smileys like that to claim a copyright ;)

lol if you watch the local news networks or listen to the radio they always over react on such things. they make the smallest of storms sound like the end of the world.

my advice to you is dont over react. if you have a porch go out there next time and watch the storm. it is one of the most beautiful sights you will ever see in your life.

( i really cant stand the people that over react. it drives me crazy)

Tornadoes happen all the time where I live.

Thankfully, none have hit my neighbourhood.

I dont even have a TV :p. I agree though, there is little more beautiful nor humbling than a powerful storm.

My desire to do that was impeded by fear of hail, and my ability to do so by rain.

yep, me too. I survived the May 3 tornadoes (http://www.srh.noaa.gov/oun/storms/19990503/) barely I got a pretty bad concussion after being hit in the head with debris, I remember videoing the storm, and then I briefly remember being in the back of someone's truck (in the bed laying down with rain coming down on me and them trying to sheild my head wound from it) and then nothing else until the next day.

I don't have rights or a copy to the footage anymore because we sold it to the local news.

That's one of the bad things about Missouri. I plan to go to college at UMR in a few years.

Do you mean Rolla? On of my best freinds goes there. We're both Pattonville alumni (Maryland Heights, off 55). Anyway, I can see how our Tornies can make it look like a bad place, but as far as other national disasters, missouri is a very safe place...except for that fault that runs directly under St. Louis city...or the 93' flooding...or places like "east side" St. Louis...Never mind, Im lucky to be alive living in this deathtrap of a state.

Yeah, Rolla.

I'm just in high school now but I've pretty much figured out what I want to do with the next 10 years. I just hope that the Aerospace Engineering program at UMR isn't very popular...

I actually saw a huge history channel documentary about an earthquake on that fault and how it would... um... suck, if it happened again.

Tornadoes? None here, though we have had a crapload of snow falling all day. Was really fun doing drive-through today.

I had a dream a few weeks ago that I was in like, Green Bay, and my car broke, and the only car the place could give me was like a Honda Fit with a broken heater.

I love sitting outside during major storms, it makes me happy :)

Yeah, East St. Louis is more dangerous than any other natural disasters in the midwest.

Best advice for a tornado. Go watch a movie, it will get your mind off it until after it passes (unless it takes out your power.) Thats what I do and I havent died yet.
