I don't care what Dems say. I like this guy. Two years ago it was hybrids in the carpool lane. He's pro-choice even though his Republican constituency often doesn't like this. He's pro-gay marriage even though political reality stopped him from signing a bill allowing it, he also has refused to sign legislation banning it - deciding to leave it the CA courts which, he knows, are very liberal. This week he signed global warming legislation that is the toughest in the nation, surpassing even Kyoto in it's goals. Now, he is doing what is probably my favorite thing so far because it is directed right at what many of you know is my point issue: energy. Congratulations to all you New Yorkers out there, too.

Breaking: Bloomberg to Announce Big Sustainability Plan Today
In California With Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger

We knew that a major policy announcement on long-term planning and environmental sustainability was imminent when we heard last week that Mayor Bloomberg had asked City Council to push back their sustainability hearing from September 18th to the 26th. A New York City Mayor likes nothing less than City Council trumping him on a major policy initiative.

Now Streetsblog has learned that Mayor Bloomberg will make a major announcement on New York City sustainability policy today at 3:00 pm EST. Here's the catch: He'll be making that announcement in Sunnyvale, California with Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. They'll be appearing at the offices of Bloom Energy, formerly known as Ion America, a high-tech start-up company that apparently specializes in fuel cell technology. We do not know what the details of the announcement will be -- "long-term planning and sustainability" covers a lot of ground -- but based on a couple of recent hires in Deputy Mayor Dan Doctoroff's new shop, we surmise that the mayor may be touching on economic development, transportation, energy and greenhouse gas emissions in today's talk.

Arnold's pretty close to being a RINO, but we knew that going in. It's a glass half full/glass half empty situation. Unlike, say, Democrats in Connecticut, the Republican Party has a place for people with a range of opinions on the issues.

I voted for him, I'll vote for him again and this year I'll probably even campaign for him. The alternative is too depressing to think about. Phil Angelides is nothing but "raise taxes".

Let me disabuse you of a couple of notions, New Mitanni. First of all, if Arnold had run for governor in any other way than the way he did, he wouldn't have made it. His personal life couldn't withstand the kind of scrutiny that a long campaign would have put on him as a challenger. His incumbency allows him some leeway on that now. Secondly, you act as though the California republican party is this open and free group, when the fact is that it's as wingnutty as any in the nation, which is why they can't find a Republican who can break 42% in a Senate race, no matter how hard they try.

As far as this policy is concerned, it's good news. I still don't like Arnold, and if I still lived in California, I'd be campaigning against him, but it looks like he learned the lessons of his ass-beating in the special elections last year and is finally governing like the moderate he promised to be. Now if he'd just sign that damn electoral college workaround bill.
