So now I can get killed for being on NSG?

Naliitr

According to my step-dad, whom I really am having a love-hate relationship with right now, I can get killed on NSG. How? According to him, people are right now as I type this message hacking into my computer, for no good reason. They then will decide, for the hell of it, to monitor what I do on my computer. They will see me posting political, moral, and religiousopinions on here that they don't agree with, then go through the trouble of tracking me down, coming to my school or house, and kill me. When I asked my step-dad where else I was supposed to do what I love, he told me anywhere else besides on the computer. I asked him where that was supposed to be. He said school. Now then, you may or may not know how much the average Californian High Schooler knows about politics. To put it simply, all they know about politics is what they hear from their parents or from the teachers. They will stick to an opinion just because it was the first they heard, and no matter how much evidence to the contrary they will stick to it. Would you enjoy debating with someone like that? And besides that no one would even want to debate with me because they don't care about politics, religion, or morals. Then when I told him I had protection against hackers(I have about five non-commercial proxies running in the background [We all know non-commercial proxies do a hell of a lot of a better job than commercial ones]). He said that I don't know anything about computers. However, whenever he needs help with computers, he asks me. So yeah... Tell me what you think.

He won't listen. He thinks I'm a stupid kid who doesn't know anything when I'm trying to prove him wrong, but as in the OP he loves my tech savvy skills when I'm doing something helpful for him.

I don't use "standard" firewalls, if by those you mean the commercial ones which are overly advertised, like Norton or McAffe (My mom does have them on here but I turn them off since all they do is take up RAM). Instead I use more appropriate ones like Tor and FoxyProxy.

your step-dad's logic is not rational. I would say that it is based on a fear of things that he doesn't understand (such as the internet).

I highly doubt that anything you post here could so insense someone that they would go to that much trouble to kill you. not to mention the kind of computer skills and resorces they would need to carry out the senario he is proposing are not very likely to be possessed by the sort of raging homicidal lunitic that would read something on a message board and decide to kill the author of it.

Why do you think I'm constantly on the look out for more proxies? I'm trying to build up as much of a wall as possible. Let's also not forget that I have some tools of my own to screw around with anybody's computer who wishes to try and get into mine.

I would tell him that it would be harder for a hacker to track you down with the information from your computer then it would be for some guy with a phone book, assuming you don't have your name on any documents on your computer.
So we have a 1 in 19,999 chance that the hacker actually gets in with your firewall, then a 1 in 1,000 chance that he can find some information on you, then another 1 in 1000 chance that he'll care about your political beliefs enough to kill you, then add another 1 in 10 chance that he knows how to find a california phone book and how to look up an address with a phone number.
Total:1 in 199,990,000,000
You'll notice that those odds are much worse then the odds of winning the lottery. Might want to ask him if he's willing to buy a lottery ticket at those odds first, if he doesn't already.

By the way, the chances of someone at school trying are quite a bit higher:
They probably already know your name so we'll skip a bit:
1 in 1000 chance they care about your political beliefs enough to kill you.
1 in 2 chance they can find a california phone book and know how to look up an address with a phone number.
Total:1 in 2000 chance they'll be able to kill you. Worse chance of actually doing it, probably, but this is still better odds for them then on the internet.
It's about ninety nine million times better, in fact.

EDIT: Forgot to mention:
The odds of someone actually doing it are worse then I gave, because the kind of person that's smart enough to get past five proxies is not usually the kind of person that gets so angry they try to kill you because of some stuff you posted on the internet.

Meh, not really. But whatever, that's beside the point.

Try having one of the IT people you know explain it to your stepdad. He might be more willing to see reason if he hears the same thing you've been telling him come from the lips of another adult. If that doesn't work... well, are there other places you can use the internet? School, libraries, etc?

That said, it is probably much more likely that your father, or another family member, will kill you, than someone at your school, at the mall, or from the internet. Domestic violence is much more prevalent than random violence. Sadly, I might add. :(

Here's a hint: don't give out any info about where you go to school... where you live... what you look like... what your name is...

You're more likely to be tracked down by that than by evil hackers finding out your IP address.

Oh, but Kat! They can find out THAT information by hacking!

Along the lines of that logic: Since the Government pays for all of our protection, etc., that means they can access all of our private information.
Erm, who pays taxes to actually sustain the government? ;)

Well, the could, but I doubt anyone on NS could possibly be considered worth the effort. Paranoia always starts with a vastly inflated sense of self-importance.

In Soviet Russia, outdoors enjoys YOU!

Aside from that lame joke, I agree - people suck. Nature is more fun; too bad wherever you go nowadays you cannot avoid the human scourge. <.<

That sounds very rape-ish, though.
And now, after having watched Alice, I know I'm going to have dreams about the Russian Countryside becoming alive and chasing after preteen girls.
You and Svankmejer, always fucking with my head.

You can try hiding in the closet. My closet doesn't have any people in it. Just clothes and rat poison.
Mmm, tasty rat poison that makes the pain go away . . .

And most "nature" you find is artificial nature created by man for asthetics.

Well, you know what city I live in. From that, there's about three High Schools I could be in, each with 2.5k students in each one. Of course, if you dig my photos up from that old photo thread, you know what I look like and could possibly find me in that mess.

Then I guess a forum is the place to be. People start annoying you, simply log off and poof! the annoyance has been removed. :)

Now if you are only 13 I don't see why anyone would want you harm. Anyone who would disagree with you so vehemently would see you are just a kid. Somehow I doubt that the crazy would sentence you to death for disagreeing with him/her politically. Probably just kidnap you and try to convert you. :p

If you feel insulted by the "kid" thing, sorry, I'm just saying. :)

Yeah, but that's not the point.

Actually it is, We pay for the government through our taxes, we elect the people to government position. Everyone in government is held accountable by the people, so in a sense we control the government, so no, they can't "just look at our records".

Sorry, that example got busted.

Precisement. The government is supposedly comprised of representatives who act as caretakers of our "property," so to speak. They are our lackeys, and not vice-versa. That in reality the opposite happens is irrelevant. :p

Actually, I gave my city. Never gave my school. And there's plenty of divorcee's here in California. And how does listing the protections on my computer lead to being found?

I'm no longer emo. I dropped that long ago. And believe me, it does NOT narrow it down. The smell of emo is strong in the air at my school.

Wait until the next time your step-dad asks for your help.

THEN make him admit you know about computers!
Withhold the help if you have to.

This does assume you're strong-headed and stubborn enough to endure whatever counter-blackmail he comes up with.

Unlikely, but likelier than someone finding all that out on your computer. The point is, if you post a picture here, then your age in another thread, then your town, etc etc etc, someone might be able to put it all together and find you.

Mothballs get stuck in the throat, but Rat Poison goes down smooth and easy.

Creepy Guy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jan_%C5%A0vankmajer) obsessed with teeth, sex and stop-motion animation. The basic rule to his movies is: if it exists, it can, and probably will, come to life, and will do so in the most disturbing way possible.

Woah....Its like my life cloned.

But i live in SC, so people here don't know shiiiiit.

Yeah, but at least the people on here actually debate their position instead of just say over and over again that they're right.
