A Question for Keruvalia

My faculty (Geography) has a compulsory excursion to the Swiss Alps next month, to be precise: Oct 14-21st. This is during Ramadan, which could be causing problems for one of my classmates, Mohammed, because it involves a 30 km/20 mile stretch of hillwalking over rough terrain. Me (the only experienced climber in my class), and my teachers Daphne and Kathy have discussed this, and thought of keeping track of Mohammed, and if necessary "order" him to drink.

I was thinking there should be a better way of solving this problem, i think i've read passages in the Qu'ran once concerning fasting and travelling, and that you're okay to eat/drink while travelling. I'd figure that a 30km stretch of hillwalking for Geology classes could be considered "Travelling". Do you know of any Surahs to back this up?

Anything i can use as reference is welcome.

Thanks.

There is a passage, I forget where though, that does permit someone to forgo the fast during Ramadan if they are unable to for any number of reasons. I'm sure if he looked it up, he might see that he is exempt from it due to these circumstances.

Keruvalia isn't a Muslim anymore, but surely it's madness not to eat and drink while undergoing physical exertion.

Surah Al-Baqara:

'But if anyone is ill, or on a journey, the prescribed period should be made up by days later. Allah intends every facility for you; He does not want to put you to difficulties.'

He'll be fine. :)

Nope! Proudly apostate!

Wow when did that happen?

A while back. I don't remember exactly when anymore, but I do remember why.

Wowwwww.

Would it be bad form to ask the reason?

I'd rather not say. I don't feel it's my place to influence anyone's religious beliefs and I don't want to be a party to anyone else going apostate by my reasoning. I'd rather people take their journeys without me. :)

No worries. Just a little curiosity but I will respect your wishes. :)

Thanks.

I've just sent Mo an email with the request to read Surah 2:185 and talk to his imam about it.
This option comforts me a lot more as well, because i don't have to babysit someone who doesn't eat or drink when he's supposed to. (I've been in two mountain rescues before, can go without #3 involving one of my classmates)

Cheers,
