It's official. The image of the super-svelte Frenchwoman has taken a battering after a new survey showed more than a third are overweight.
In all, the study found that 19.8 million people out of the country's population of 63 million were too fat, and that 5.9 million of them were obese - 2.3 million more than nine years ago.
"Women appear to be more affected than men," said Professor Arnaud Basdevant, a Paris hospital nutritionist who jointly co-ordinated the study.
"Women's waistlines are certainly expanding the fastest," he added.
The survey revealed that, rather than following in the slender tradition of a young Brigitte Bardot, more than a third of French women are overweight. Far too many drink to excess, with one in 30 consuming enough to be classed as an alcoholic.
So, am I to presume that there are a fair number of corpulent French women, walking around in pink polyester shorts, their hair in curlers, chain smoking Gauloise, chewing on pastries all afternoon, and draining bottle after bottle of Pernod?

OK, how long before they catch up to the U.S.? Or Britain, since I heard they were on the same path as well...

Pretty much all Western countries are. We now have more people in the world dying of excess than dying of starvation. Pretty sad state of affairs when a large portion of the world's population can't get enough to eat, and another large portion is getting entirely too much.

It also sounds like a good number of them like the alkee a bit much as well...one in 30 is an alcoholic? If one in 30 people in the U.S. is an alcoholic, that means there are 10 million of us...or about 2 million French.
That and I don't see them trying to weed out smoking, which is worse than either alcohol or obesity, in my eyes and in the eyes of many...I don't know too many people who are allergic to secondhand fat.
Sounds like they're going to pass the US at this rate.
Eh, no. One third of French women may be overweight, but (if I recall correctly) about 30% of Americans are obese, about two thirds are overweight.

If you're implying I'm overweight, I'm not. Rather the reverse: me (http://img233.exs.cx/img233/7439/nlmeevilu3pz.jpg), and me again (http://img233.exs.cx/img233/6623/nlmeboat3mm.jpg).

What's with the Daily Mail citing recently?
The inevetible 'zomg, teh daily mail sez,' followed by the, 'stfu, daily mail am t3h facists,' is getting a bit predictable. You'd be better off finding another source of the story so that the thread could get straight into the topic at hand.
maybe we should focus on the beautiful French women instead on the obese ones?

The bigger the cushion, the sweeter the pushin'
That's what I said
The looser the waistband, the deeper the quicksand
Or so I have read
My baby fits me like a flesh tuxedo
I'd like to sink her with my pink torpedo
Big bottom, big bottom
Talk about bum cakes, my girl's got 'em
Big bottom drive me out of my mind
How could I leave this behind?

Are you gonna let it all hang out

I'm pretty sure DK was attempting to reference this.

As far as women go, Arridia leaves much to be desired. If that's what's happened to French women, I would advise people to stop visiting France.

Spinal Tap. It predates Sir Mix-a-Lot, and it was also talking about big women, not women with big butts.

I know the song's different, but more people seem to know Sir Mix-a-Lot's work, and really, they both seem to have the same focus, but maybe to a different degree. Sir Mix-a-Lot was more about "rail thin is bad" and it seems to me Spinal Tap was saying "the bigger the better."

You fail miserably. I'm sick and tired of this fucking French bashing - and I'm German, so I usually shouldn't mind all that much. If that doesn't tell you anything, you'll have to re-read the first sentence of my reply.
Last time I checked it was your country that were the United States of Lardasses.

Hate to burst your bubble, but the US is NOT number one in alcoholism. Most westernized countries are in fact the same as the US, with I think Italy being the highest. Almost all of them were about 5.5% of the population though. Go ahead, crunch the numbers yourself

I think us Brits have it for binge drinking, although the definition of a binge in one study I read last year was so small I'm not too surprised.

It's just every day there's another thread about France and how to make the country and its people look stupid/bad/etc. - and especially with a topic like this one it's getting more than just stupid.
