Fear, mmmkay?

In one of my classes we were talking about teens and sex, drugs and teens, etc etc..

Well I kept feeling that instead of teaching us how to be safe and prevent risks and whatnot, the teacher was telling us all the bad things and well, scare us into not doing anything..

Or something.

Do people use fear as a tool?

Do people use fear as a tool? Why not? It isn't as though it was unhealthy to fear the consequences of mistakes.

Depends on the teacher, I guess.
It's his job to inform you on the possible risks, but how he gets the message across might be influenced by his personal views.

fear is such a useless tactic when dealing with teens and sex.

yes you do need to know the bad things associated with sexual intimacy but few kids are thinking "i wonder if my 14 year old girlfriend has herpes" when faced with that rush of sexual desire.

everyone needs to know what might happen and what the strategies are to avoid those things. then you can make an informed decision based on your own circumstances.

Evil!

everyone does it.

"don't touch the plug outlet you will die!"

"don't play with the stove you will catch the house on fire!"

"don't play in the street or you will get runover by a car!"

This thread is stupid. Of course you can force things on people with fear.

"Don't move or I'm going to shoot you dead."

"Don't stick you hand in the lion's cage or he will take your arm off"

No shit Sherlock.

Yes, but! Some people will inevitably work with lions! And so, they ought to know how to avoid getting their arm forcibly detached from their body, and not just be continually told what bad could happen without the proper protection (knowing about the lion and how to act around it, etc.).

Fear is constantly being used to enforce a point. It's not necessarily a bad thing. It just ought to be accompanied by information and tools/knowledge on how to avoid what leads to that fear.

Peter Griffin: Yeah, I'm looking for some toilet training books.

Salesman: Oh, yes, we can help you there. "Everyone poops" is still the standard, of course. We've also got less popular "Nobody Poops But You".

Peter Griffin: Huh... well... you see... we're Catholic so... uh...

Salesman: Oh, well then you want "You're a Naughty Child and that's Concentrated Evil Coming Out of the Back of You".

Hey, smart ass, I was talking about stuff like putting fear into things that should be learned, not feared.

Didn't your parents ever tell you not to be so cocky? You'll never get any friends being cocky.

Now run along lil' kid.

yes I noticed the pollCondoms don't particularly protect against herpes. Perhaps this was what Ruffy's teacher was saying?

She was surprised that I'd let my kid watch a "sexy" music video.. not really sure if that proves anything..
Perhaps this was what Ruffy's teacher was saying?

Acourse they do... and it's not a bad thing at all.

However, I'd be more in the "If you have sex outside marriage it is sin" sort of fear, not stupid STDs. God anger's a LOT worse than an STD.
