I'm eating. I'm thinking aboot food. I'm thinking of resturants. Also, I'm thinking about bad grammar. But more about food. So. Let's. Talk.

About food.

When you go to a resturant you've never been to before, and their menu sucks, what is your safe plate?

Safe plate - A meal that you can always count on being on the menu that you like.

My first is: Chicken Cesar Salad.
My second is: BLT

What are yours?

I don't really have one, because not much is guaranteed safe for me, I tend to look for chicken breast (grilled) and steamed veggies (unseasoned and without butter) but I still have to ask if the chicken was marinated or frozen in broth.

my only really safe bet is plain raw veggies.

however, before I was restricted, my safe plate was always steak and a baked potato.

Well, it's kind of tough to fuck up a bacon cheese burger. I've had a couple of bad ones, but it's usually at least OK.

Depends. If its an independant pub, then steak.

If its a general restaurant, probably Caesar Salad or Veal.

Steak, or scampi and chips.
Cannot think of a name
19-09-2006, 21:11
At a Mexican restuarant it would be the Super Buritto.

Other than that I usually go with the chicken club or some equivilant. Or a chicken parmisean sandwich.

Something with chicken in it.

And bacon. (except in the buritto, unless it's a breakfast buritto...)

I am an adventurous eater, so no safe plate for me.

I once tried the jelly fish just because I'd never had it before. I've tried the fried okra, the rattlesnake, tripe, tongue sandwiches (very good!) and all sorts of other things when the menu didn't seem to provide any of my favorites. My family has a game called "Mystery Soup". When in a restaurant you order the soup of the day but don't let them tell you what it is. Then, when it comes, it is either a pleasant surprise, or something you try and say "well, that was something, wasn't it?" I once got a fantastic lobster bisque in a mediocre restaurant that way.

I do like a nice prime rib, though... :D

Onion rings are tasty. :)

I once read a story on www.stainedapron.com about a couple of women who went into an Italian restaurant and one ordered calamari. When their plates came the other woman asked why she didn't get onion rings on her platter. When the waiter explained that calamari was squid the first woman freaked out.

I don't care. Onion rings are cheap even at expensive places.

I ate twenty onion rings today, and that cost my date £1.20. I'm cheap. ;)

Dammit! Maybe I should head over into the "Inability to read"-thread, because not only did I misread "Big Bang" for "Big Band" - but I misread this here title as "What's your safe place?"...

Geologically, I depend on the North American Plate.

In a restaurant, chicken Caesar, yeah, that's usually safe, or a steak and fires (don't like 'em baked, Smunkee).

Depends on where I am... back home in Germany in a regular (speak: German) restaurant, Wiener Schnitzel and fries.

Here in Ireland... ok, food in Ireland can be bad. And I mean really bad. I'm talking culinary nightmares. Fries can be mushy, meat hard and tasteless, vegetables boiled white, the concept of "salad" seems to puzzle the nation... I'd probably go with soup. Whatever's wrong with it can probably be fixed with a bit of salt.

If I can order breakfast, I'll get French toast, bacon, and hash browns with coffee and OJ

I've yet to find a place so bad that they messed THAT simple meal up.

If I can't order breakfast, I'll usually stick to Chicken....fried, grilled, or whatever.
