Is this what you are talking about?

Thai tourist operators fear Australian and other foreign tourists might steer clear of popular southern resort islands following a weekend bombing attack.

Australians are among an estimated 7,000 foreign tourists who have already cancelled plans to visit the south of Thailand and northern Malaysia in the wake of Saturday's bombings in the southern city of Hat Yai, which killed four and wounded dozens.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) has cautioned travellers that the violence in the south could spread to other parts of Thailand.

No. It's happening right now. Check out CNN. Nobody knows what's going on yet.

If you think that chaos is good, you'd like the news I guess. I just find it sad that elected offcials are once again ousted at the point of a gun.

According to CNN on TV, the Thai PM has declared a state of emergency.

Looks like our day just got a little more interesting.

As long as the chaos doesn't affect me. Sucks for the poor people of Thailand, but it gives us something to talk about. It's like Mao said, "Political power grows out of the barrel of a gun."

Also, turns out the Thai PM is in NYC for a UN thingy. Yep, definitely a fucking coup.

Man, I'm trying to juggle this coup thing, and porn. Hard work.

And I deplore your attitude. I don't see anything even remotely interesting in a coup. I find it deplorable.

Also, "Sucks for the poor people of Thailand"? What kind of lame-ass attitude is that? Don't come crying the next time something bad happen or your pet cause gets criticized. You'll find no sympathy from my part.

What? I feel sorry for them. I just find it interesting that a part of history is unraveling before our eyes. I'm sure people said the same thing as you during Bloody Sunday or the Beer Hall Putsch.

I was there during the summer, and Thailand has been preparing itself for a coup since the start/middle of July. Besides, if there was one, it wudnt be a new thing. Theyve had 7 since the end of WW2!!

Thanks, but it's not the coup itself I'm worried about, it's the fact that, if it succeeds, all hell will break loose. The Thais will not take it sitting down.

Probably the King or itself. Unlikely to be the Prime Minister in any case.

However, this is an elegant solution to my problem of what to do with Blair.

The govt. says it's still in control and that it expects everything to be back to normal soon. I call bullshit.

EDIT: The Army's declared martial law. Goody.

The problem is that Central Asia is shaping up to turn into Eastern Africa, and that students of geography are going to be very upset when the name changes start going into effect.

Well, if that's true, then we're all going to be in even more trouble. That's another sector of the world that's collapsing into chaos.

I've heard, though, that the Thai PM is corrupt, and that he's been buddy-buddy with the Myanmar dictatorship for his own personal financial gain. Still, the violence caused by a coup is not good.

Perhaps it is not over yet (http://news.sympatico.msn.ctv.ca/TopStories/ContentPosting.aspx?newsitemid=CTVNews%2f20060919%2fthailand_coup_060919&feedname=CTV-TOPSTORIES_V2&showbyline=True)?

Bolstered by their widespread support in the country's rural areas, Thaksin's Thai Rak Thai party has twice won landslide election victories in 2001 and 2005. They had been expected to win an upcoming vote.
Seems like the ousted Prime Minister's party was extremely popular.

There's a fairly long crisis been going on there. It's mostly a corruption scandal, but the insurgency in the south is wrapped up in it as well. There've been rumors about a coup for months now.

Nah. Thailand's not in Central Asia for one thing. And they have a history of coups - this makes the 18th since 1932.

The last one before this was in 1991. D'you reckon they have a sign that says "x Days Since Coup" and they just set it back to zero?

I haven't been keeping up to date on this (I knew of it, but little more than that)

is this a fair assessment:

1: PM (corrupt?) leaves for NY
2: Rebels take control
3: Military takes control
4: Military says it will secede power to be back to status quo.

is that about right?

all the reports say 'bloodless', but I could swear I saw the word 'bombing' in there somewhere.

so nobody died?

and things are (if the military is telling the truth) going to return to normal?

No blood, unfortunately for the tabloids.

No, the rebels and a military are the same faction. Basically, the army took over from the legitimate govt.. So, no, things probably won't go back to "normal", because the rebels seem to have won.
