Are you an autodidact?

See here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autodidact) if you're not certain what it means. Basically, do you teach yourself, primarily for pleasure? I'm a compulsive learner and autodidact. I've taught myself French, Italian and some Latin and German, as well as being highly versed in linguistic theory, meaning I can recognise (and sometimes read) derivitive Germanic/Finno-Ugric/Romance languages even if I've not encountered them before. In addition to this, I'm an autodidact website designer, programmer, computer hardware specialist and graphics designer. I've self taught myself anatomy, philosophy and the basics of advanced physics. By trade I'm an artist, and I simply find everything interesting. I'm not sure why.

I learn best when I teach myself through trial and error. Being taught by teachers generally bores me.

the only way I ever learn anything is to teach myself.

right now I am about to teach myself how to rebuild the engine on my Jeep. ;)

Sorta. I love learning general knowledge, but nothing in depth.

I'll learn something in depth if I think it's worthwhile. Learning linguistic theory, for example, helped me learn many languages I'd have otherwise struggled with.

I'd say I prefer to teach myself though I probably learn nothing important when I do of course I will probably learn more by myself because I will listen to my own views allot more than a teachers

I have a natural curiosity, currently teaching myself Japanese, though I doubt I'll finish learning it. I lost interest in things quickly so my abilities and knowledge are very broad, but not very deep.

I did attempt to teach myself Japanese once, but gave up shortly afterwards, because I simply didn't have decent materials to work with.

taught myself everything i know about graphic design and web-developing, which is my job these days. also ditto for market research analysis, but that's mostly just common sense.
taught myself everything i know about computers, and music.

just haven't self-taught myself any academic stuff is all. non-practical stuff generally annoys me

I try, yes. I'm not exactly comppulsive, but yes, I do tend to teach myself things if I'm interested in them.

I tend to rely alot on the "I think I can figure it out" method of things. I don't know that I'm fully autodidactic, but I will tend to just start fiddling with things and whatever else to figure out how to do them. Most of the things I'm really good at I just started messing with. But I also can learn a lot from people who already know what they're doing. So maybe I start that way and finish under tootlage. Or something.

Absolutely, and I have what is referred to as the 'languages bug' - I just can't stop learning them. Mind you, that's probably due to the fact that i have enoiugh money that I only have to work about 80 hrs a year.
