Well, since the camera is already there, I don't think the loud speaker is that big of a step. I wonder if this means that the desperately lonely in Middleborough will wander out at night to have conversations with the Security cameras . . .
Yep... Keep watching America... while in Britian, they're taking away your doormats and watching you and now passing judgement right there...
I wonder about the two blokes fighting outside the nightclub tho... did they think that it was God speaking from the Heavens?

Oh I could tell you, but then we would never get to partake in life's greatest joys.
Mainly because I think that the bigger the government, the more control they'll try to put onto the masses in public and private life. Nice of Britian to demostrate this point for me.

There was a case a few months ago where some CCTV operators were found guilty of sexual assault or some similar offence for setting their camera up to watch a woman changing through her flat window.
As for talking cameras, that is a bit...strange. You come to learn to live with the presence of CCTV everywhere, but some Brummy operator shouting at you to do things from the other end? That's more than a bit too much.

if only britons would generally be a bit more touchy about their freedom and more skeptic when the government goes "oh but it is for you law abiding lot... why should the law-abiding majority (/* oh how i hate that phrase */) suffer because of a few delinquents" the whole thing would be easy to boycot... but the heard mentality in this country is beyond belief:mad:

and also it's not as if CCTV cameras do much in England anyway, I must of done something worthy of an ASBO (not much that you can do that'll not give you an ASBO) hundreds of times in front of a CCTV camera, and not a single complaint about my behaviour, but I'm not supporting these things, though it will be kinda comical...

These things are scary. Even if you leave ideas like profiles of movements fir the future so far, the privacy is seriously inhibited. Also, in my opinion, this is lowering the respect of people in the laws in general and therefore achieve the exact opposite of what is intended. Also, you will be enticed to delegate responsibility to the state. Since "hey, they have seen it as well!"

I expect Guy Fawkes masks to be appearing soon enough...
I think the CCTV cameras are over the top. But since Nanny put them up anyway I think that the speakers probably humanise the damned things a little and can actually lower the number of crimes committed in their immediate vicinity by reminding drunken chavs that they are being watched.
It might be worth the few extra quid it would cost to fit robot arms to the camera poles. These should look just like the arms on the Lost in Space robot and should perform the same function: to wave around in a wildly spastic fashion to call sattention to themselves whenever the loudspeakers are annunciating danger or warnings. Filtering the plod's voice so that it sounds like a robot would also be a plus.
The cameras and loudspeakers are a Big Brother-ish, but think how cool it'd be to work in the control room!

Exactly what I was thinking. My favourite passage is the operators' guidelines:
"The control room operators have been given strict guidelines about what commands they can give. Yelling 'Oi you, stop that', is not permitted."
I can just hear the accent.
I think this is a great idea. Laws cannot be enforced if people are selfish, and they're selfish unless they can get caught. Train people to follow the Golden Rule and this wouldn't be necessary.

New security cameras that scold you for "anti-social" behavior...I dont really like to be the guy to toss out overused phrases like "big brother", but I really find this quite frightening. your thoughts?
I am unclear on what purpose these cameras serve. If it is to discourage mild forms of "anti-social" behaviour such as littering, then they seem a bit excessive. And I hardly think they are going to "shame" people engaging in drunken brawls into acting better.
Also, the opportunity for abuse by either the government or certain individuals who have access to them is tremendous. They can be used for sexual harassment or predation (as has already occurred) or even blackmail.
So I can't see these serving any useful purpose, and the potential for abuse is high. How much more of our freedom are we prepared to give away for the false sense of security these measures provide?
Maybe when nobody is misbehaving they can use the system to subliminally send pro-nanny and pro-gummint nationalistic messages at very low volume levels.
