Same, it really depends on the occasion too and the type of liqour/beer. Beer is good to get drunk on though especially if I don't want to have too much of a hangover.

Hell, when my daughter lived with me, she'd go out to nightclubs with me and my girlfriend. She almost never got carded--she was 15. I figured, if they're not going to check her, I'm going to let her drink. Better she learn now and build up enough tolerance to drink her dumbass friends under the table than vice versa ad get taken advantage of.

when I had a drinking problem my drink of choice was mostly vodka, because it was easy to sneek into stuff and drink while I was at school or working.

now that I can (strike that could) drink without a problem I was partial to rum and good ole crown and coke.

I can still have Makers Mark and coke but it's not as smooth....and I can have wine and some types of rum....so that's nice.

Adding myself to the club of underage drinkers here, but I'm a gin and tonic fan. Mostly on excessively expensive London gin that my parents splurge on, never drink and forget they own.

Even funnier when you realize, I'm a British Empire enthusiast with a 'rule the world' fascination, mahogany panelled library and the ability to fake an upper-crust English accent really well. My friend and I had the best time while my parents were out, oh yes.

EDIT: I am not as disgustingly rich as that post made it sound. For example, it's fake mahogany.
And I hate beer.

I tend to drink for the taste so usually either beer or scotch.

Had a bad experience with Waragi (Ugandan spirit, kinda like gin, they sell it in 100ml sachets and we drank them from the sachets*) and underagers so I've tended to stick with beer because it takes so much more to really screw you up.

I know quite a few alcoholics who were sober for various lengths of time (measured in years), who thought that they were "cured" and could take an occaisional "social" drink. Invariably, they all ended up returning to their full blown alcoholic drinking. Their denial caused them nothing but pain and anguish, so be careful, especially when you state:

Do you have a strict numerical limit on how much you can drink?

If not, I recommend setting a specific limit, sticking to it tenaciously, and providing yourself with negative consequences if you don't stick to it.

the minute you have to set a limit is when you are getting in over your head. I haven't had a drink of alcohol at all in about 4 months because my attitude and coping skills aren't in a "right place", I am scared to even drink a little bit.

I know that right now with all the stress that is going on in my life and the way that I am not handleing it well, that one drink could push me over the edge and back into the "bad place" that was my life when I was drunk and high and could rationalize it.

Nah. Setting boundaries for appropriate behavior is just a normal part of human social and personal functioning.

I guess for me it was a sign of my problem, I would start with "I am only going to drink after 5pm" then "I am only going to drink <certain number of drinks>" and so on, until I had rationalized it to the point that I was drinking all day long, upwards of a fifth of vodka a day or more, just to function. I figure if I can drink without making rules I am okay, but when I start to set down "this is the line" then I know I have already crossed it.

It sounds like you're making a good decision there. :)

I am making a lot better decisions these days than I give myself credit for. I hope that my current clear view of the situation prevails until things get better.

mostly because I was not being honest with myself about how I was dealing with life at that point. I remember going to rehab (the time before the time I went when it "stuck") and telling them that I was doing fine. I thought that because I showed up to work, paid my bills, and nobody really knew that I had a problem (outside of the people who lived with me) that I was fine. I thought that because I hadn't "hit rock bottom" that I didn't have a problem. I saw my dad growing up, he lost his job, his family, I just thought I wasn't that far gone.....I was wrong though.

I think I lie to myself a lot, I think I have things under control, but I don't, and when I realize that I don't I find bad ways to deal with it.

Hm. It sounds like your essential problem is a lack of self-honesty. That used to be mine too, actually, though it didn't manifest itself through drinking, but through unhealthy sexual activity and bouts of anger instead.

I think I am doing okay for now, I have 100% disclosure with my husband, so he tends to head me off at the pass when my thinking gets out of control.

I love to try something different (southern European, eastern European rocket-feul) ... but for every day, it's got to be wine.

Beer has too much sugar in it, and too much water. A beer is OK, but getting drunk on it is a real bummer. Cider is even worse. Spirits have the opposite problem: once you get a taste for it, you drink it straight, and dehydrate like crazy.

Wine is just about right, and it's loaded with antioxidants from the grapes too.

Fortunately, some of us have people in our lives who will be there when we need them the most. Sadly not everyone does. But as individualistic as I am both personally and politically, I think there's nothing necessarily wrong with short-term dependence in tough situations, or even long-term dependence in certain cases.
