Stalked by a black cat.

I was just stalked by a creature the size of my foot. Walking the mutt, at night, and there's this small black cat out there, I get annoyed cause the dog gets all worked up, but move on. About a block and a half later, I notice it's behind us (within fifteen feet) and staring. My first thought is rabies, and I wonder if it's going to rush Joe. (my dog) I pick the dog up and watch as the cat sits down on the oppisite side of the street and stares before mewing at me. I stare back for a few minutes, used to having to stare down the pack of dogs that lives around here. The cat stays motionless and keeps his eyes locked on me. I decided that there is no way I'm going down to the dark corner like I had planned and promptly began walking home. After about fifteen seconds the cat followed me, always keeping it's distance. I set the dog down hoping he'd do his business but of course he didn't and we walked home, stopping occasionally to try and stare the thing down again. My eyes never left it, even in the gaps between the streetlights combined with my bad eyesight reduced it to a shadow. It stayed on the other side of the street, watching me the whole way home. As far as I know it's still out there. I've seen it before but never noticed it stalking me like that... at one point I actually considered that it was a demon of some sort. If it weren't for the dog being worked up I'd wonder if it was a hallucination. I'm more then a little creeped out here. What if it's there tomorrow night? Am I just being paranoid? NSG, HELP!

I was stalked by a cat too when out for a walk. A small cute kitten, not a scary black cat. But I think it's the same principle - some felines are just curious.

Either that or it's a demon.

Believe it or not, this is pretty common. You are being paranoid. Homeless cats are known to follow people right into their homes. They need hardly a reason, but your eye contact probably made it think of some form of compassion it needed. You're kind of stuck with it for now. I don't know how to get rid of it short of anything cruel. If you put any food or water out then it definately won't go away.
But, no, it's not a demon. If you can pick up and carry your dog, I'd guess it's a small breed and/or a puppy. If it had limited experiance (or even a bad one) it would explain the dog's attitude.
Maybe call the animal shelter, or even better, someone who'd like a pet cat to take care of.

I actually wouldn't mind that, but Vacuumhead lives across the ocean.

It's a small breed, got somwe arthritis problems, so I'm used to him being paranoid. I took his agitation simply as proof that I wasn't hallucinating.

There's dog kibble and water outside, for the neihbor's dog. Might it be brave enough to go for that?

the cat might have chosen you and your home to live in.
you can test this by putting some food out and seeing if it will take it while you're standing there... if so... congrats, you got a cat.
if you don't want it, invite it in, box it up and take it to the humane society.

if it doesn't take the food while you're standing there, then it's looking for a free meal. take the food back in and ignore it.

Feed it and be it's friend, ignore it...or...

EAT IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I suggest the first one. While cats may be a bit nutty at times, they're good to have around, and a stray might make a good mouser, should you ever have to deal with that problem.

The second option comes in second place, and I'd generally advise avoiding the third option.

But it sounds as if the cat decided to adopt you as its pet for a bit. Feel honored.

as long as your mutt does not provok the cat it will be fine. if the cat is bothered by the dog it will stay away from it.

Then probably shouldn't have any problems. If the cat is young enough, it might even start playing with the dog (er, as in a friendly way, not as in toying with it before the kill).

As has been said, if it wanted to, it would have already tried to. The cat sounds harmless.

My cat on the other hand DOES stalk and attack dogs. It is very easy to tell when she is in stalk mode. The pupils of her eyes dialate greatly (it being dark, your cat's eyes will probably be dialated so don't worry about it), she slinks very close to the ground like a snake, her tail fluffs up and twitches, and if anyone moves towards her suprising her and "blowing her cover" she jumps several feet in the air. A stalking cat would NEVER meow at you.

By meowing at a person, a cat is trying to "communicate," let you know she is friendly, and gauge your reaction to her. It's usualy a sort of "are we cool?" or "will you feed me?" kind of thing.
Not bad

Exactly, and THC is the drug in weed. Weed is, strictly speaking, just the plant itself, not the chemical which has an effect on the body.
