I stand vindicated!

Let's put the jovial mood aside here. Bagged spinach has killed someone, and left a number of others ill.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- An outbreak of E. coli in eight states has left at least one person dead and 50 others sick, federal health officials said Thursday in warning consumers not to eat bagged fresh spinach.

The death occurred in Wisconsin, where 20 others were also sickened, said Dr. David Acheson of the Food and Drug Administration's Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition. The outbreak has sickened others -- eight of them seriously -- in Connecticut, Idaho, Indiana, Michigan, New Mexico, Oregon and Utah.

FDA officials do not know the source of the outbreak, other than it appears to be linked to bagged spinach. "We're advising people not to eat it," Acheson said.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Wisconsin health officials alerted the FDA about the outbreak Wednesday. Preliminary analysis suggests the same bug is responsible for the outbreak in all eight states.

E. coli bacteria causes diarrhea, often with bloody stools. Most healthy adults can recover completely within a week, although some people -- including the very young and old -- can develop a form of kidney failure that often leads to death.

Anyone who has gotten sick after eating raw packaged spinach should contact a doctor, officials said.

It must be that fresh bagged salad spinach that's getting people sick. People eat it in their salads raw....

That's NOT how you are supposed to eat spinach

Cook your spinach and then serve with salt, pepper, butter and a squeeze of lemon juice. :D

Silly people, raw spinach is for rabbits, not kids

That sounds more like Viagra than spinach...

Did anyone ever notice how Popeye's brand canned spinach is just about the absolute worst tasting spinach on the planet? You'd think they should do something about that...

Naw man, you gotta boil it a bit and then serve it with vineger (white or apple being the best). That's the only true way to eat it. ;)

They've had this problem with other bagged greens and veggies too. Bagged salads have given people e. coli as well. Even though they say you can eat it straight out of the bag and don't need to wash it, you NEED to wash it. If you don't want to risk getting seriously sick anyway. "Convenience" food my ass!

I really don't see how anyone could eat spinach raw...it's good cooked, but pretty bad raw. Plus, cooked fresh spinach smells somewhat like green tea so it's not too bad smelling when you make it.

The very concept of the salad seems so...unsanitary...I just plain don't eat them. And I guess I've been vindicated once and for all!

Popeye doesn't have to worry about E. Coli because he's a God. Problem solved.

Here's something else to crumble the foundation of the spinach conspiracy: spinach does not actually contain that much iron, which is how Popeye gets so strong. The reason many people believe it does can be traced to a 19th century German nutritionist who put the decimal place one space to the right, making it look like spinach has ten times as much iron as it actually does. Of course, the spinachist media swooped down on this, and the Spinacists running Hollywood (and thus Popeye) were only too eager to exploit this mistake till every person in America was believing their spinachy tripe.
