What game should I buy?

I want to buy a PC game today, because I'm bored. But I'm also poor, so it shouldn't be 100% new, but already a little bit reduced in price.

It doesn't have to be genre-specific, but I'd probably most enjoy a strategy game of some sort.

I'd go for Battlefields 2, if your computer can run it.

The Zoo Tycoon games are pretty fun, IMO.

Warcraft 3 chest (around $25)
Command and conquer generals ($10)
Age of empires ($40 or so, not worth the money yet)

Europa 1400: The Guild Gold. Fun game and cheap. Take control of a family starting in 1400 and go from there. Different occupations, towns, titles, even elections for many offices.

(theres two versions on amazon: this is cheaper [i believe they are the same])

Thats all I can think of for now, cause I'm playing it! :p

Oh, and I already own all the games everybody has. :p

I know it's not that old (in fact it's pretty new), but I like the idea of "Rise of Legends". Is that any good?

I played rise of nations (first one w/o expansion) and I thought it was pretty good.

Legends has a much less sophisticated tech tree, but the vinci culture appeals to me so I might buy it. However, tis $40 and didn’t get as good of a rating as nations.

Go download the entirely free and legal games Adom (www.adom.de) or Steel Panthers: World At War (http://www.steelpanthersonline.com/). Both game contains literally months of evenings of play to get through, and even after that you'll still be finding new features.

You can then use the money you would have spent buying a game to get 25 $1 hookers.

I'd get The Getaway (its a tps/driving game set in London). I dunno if its for PC, but I have it for playstation 2. Its a bit rough as far as controls go, but I thought the story line is excellent.

I see someone else is a fan of somethingawful.com… I hope. I shudder to think what one would have to go through to discover those terrible products of Japan’s degenerate culture barring Zack Parsons’s hilarious pseudo-reviews.

If you fancy something a bit different then try Pro Cycling Manager 2006 (think that's what it's called). Can be quite buggy, but it's a nice change, probably have to download it via the internet. google Pro Cycling Manager and you'll find it (they moved sites recently so all the links I had now fail to work).

Or by the same company "Chaos League: Sudden Death" though I don't know about availability in Australia, basically a real-time (with turnplay optional) rip-off of Bloodbowl (though the company now has the license and is making an official Bloodbowl game). Quirky violence with a side interest in scoring touchdowns, quite fun.

The horrors of hentai are something that shouldn't be explored without someone who is capable of withstanding the sheer fucked-upness of it. Who the hell could find that arousing!?

i dunno. since your poor prolly not oblivion, as it veeeery expensive. (the game itself is not really cost much, but you have to spend lots of money on upgrades for your PC if you mant it to actually work.

If you've got high speed internet, buy Oblivion and download Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul. It adds to Oblivions already decent gameplay a bajilliom times over.
If not, I also recommend Morrowind, which you can get for $20 with its addons at many stores.

If you like flight sims, IL-2 Sturmovik is an excellent WWII sim that lets you fly many planes from all the theatres of the war.

Shooters, go for Call of Duty 2 or wait for CoD 3.

If your into sims, wait for Spore to come out early next year, which is going to pwn.

There's a few games out there in the CCG vein that have costs somewhat more controllable than MMORPGs. Chron-X, Sanctum and Spirit Wars are the three most notable.

If you like immersive adventure though, wait for Bioshock.

All right, I went to the shops. I wanted to get Tropico 2, but they didn't have that. So I got Sim City 4.

I really just played the very first Sim City, and that was a lot of fun. So let's hope this is good.

Shattered Union: United We Stood...

I always wanted to play that game. Basically the United States collapses after internal violence, increased terrorism, and D.C. being blown up by a nuclear strike. I think the states get divided into six groups. California Commonwealth, Pacifica, Republic of Texas, Great Plains Federation, The Confederacy, and The New England Alliance.

Also, the EU "peacekeeping force" (notice how I used quotations) is controlling the area around the decimated chunk of land that is Washington, D.C.

Siedler IV was pretty cute (as long as you had the patches that kept it from crashing all the time). Herscher der Meere was also a nice old low graphics game, but I've had issues with it. Then again, they probably won't sell it in Australia. Just look through the cut price section of your local game store and give us a selection to give you advice on.

Just a warning, you need to be a certain kind of person to enjoy HoI and EU (basically the same game :P). Theyre slow and complicated, and many people dont like them.
HoI was fun for me though, I enjoyed invading Germany in 1939 with the Soviets and managing to get to Berlin before the entire planet freaked out.

heh. i'd have to say that, while they're in the same genre and made by the same people, Europa Universalis and Hearst of Iron 2 are very different games.

oh, and if you're going to get HoI2, get the Doomsday version. much shineyer

[seriously, when checkslovakia includes austria, hungry, romania, bulgaria, parts of germany, poland, italy, switzerland, albania, and ukraine, while france controls ... the rest of italy, germany, poland, other things, and HALF THE SOVIET UNION in 1945. you know it's good. sadly, with no axis or commintern, there realys wasn't much else for my chekslovakian monstrosity to do. :D]

i mean... Communist japan running riot in asia, or a democratic, open soviet union? perhaps a facist USA going for american hegemony. or if you want a REAL challange, try for something nigh impossible: take over europe as switzerland :D

has a decent manual and tutorials too.

Crusader Kings, fully pached, is a similar style game. and getting into it is a nightmare, but it's Great fun... who wouldn't want to be king of an england that includes only africa, for example? or unite the irish under one banner and go on a bloody rampage accross iberia and scandinavia?

or have a random sweedish count rise to become empire of byzantium... which happens to include western europe, as eastern europe [including all of byzantium it's self] has been lost to the mongol hords?

perhaps Poland ruleing everything from the Urals to the atlantic takes your fancy?

Crusader Kings follows the familys more than the nations though.

they have a Very steep learning curve, but a combination of practice and some of the automation options actually mean that, while the games are still complex, one gets a good feel for them.

umm.... don't expect to like them if you find FPS to be vastly better than stratagy games... and for all that they play in real time, you need more of the mentality behind playing Civilization than Age of Empires.

other games that are fun: Evil Genious.... though be prepaired to play several times before you do very well. it really does seem to depend on planning ahead... for stuff you don't even know can happen the first time.

Dynasty Warriors [5, and/or any of it's expansions]. oh, here's a hint: NEVER trust Jolt's reviews... the number of factual errors astonishes me, among other things. admitedly this is a PS2 game.

Black and White 2 is pretty good. be wary though. my comp meets the specs and stuff, but still has slow down/frame skipping issues on the last mission because so much stuff is going on so quickly so close togeather.

MMORPGs are nifty... if you've got friends to play with. they kinda suck if you don't. kind of self evidant fact, i guess.

yeah... ideas escape me.

Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri. Like the Civilization games, but way cooler and infinitely replayable. I should know. I've had it for probably a decade.

heh. i've got that one too. and alien crossfire. really though, the whole thing needs redoing. Civ 4 finaly took the good bits for Alpha Centauri [well, mostly. the unit design bit wouldnt' have carried over well], civ 3, and the original civilisation [though very little from civ 2] and made a Really good game out of it.

it's about time Alpha Centauri got the same treatment, i think :) not nessisaraly so much so in the graphics department [good as it looks, can you tell me, honestly, that the 3D graphics really do anything for Civ4 beyond increase the minimum specs you need to run it? heh. i'd rather have decent movies for wonders and things any day.]

not to mention, makeing alpha centauri run on one of the latest round of processors with XP [neither of which it was designed for] is a bit of a night mare. strangely, i got the original to work, but had all sorts of problems with the expansion.
