I have to say I'm getting really fed up with the number of Nannyish command posters that have started to spring up around London recently, especially on the Tube.

"Don't put your feet on the seats"
"Don't hold the doors open"
"Don't play your music too loudly"
"Do give up your seat if someone needs it"

Etc.

Sure, these are fairly sociable things to do, but do we really need the Mayor's office to waste taxpayers money advertising them?

Those are not a total waste, people somehow seem to lose all civility during rush hour in the underground. I've heard conductors in the New York City subway call over the loudspeaker, "Don't put your arm between the doors as they close, they are not elevator doors and will not open automatically."

All this seems to come from the growing delight people take these days in suing manufacturers if every little caution is not spelled out.
