Teaching Abroad?

I'm wondering about doing some teaching abroad - I get sick of lazing around here in Luxembourg. Now, I was supposedly born with a silver spoon in my mouth (my sister, however, was born with the whole cutlery draw!), but I sometimes think it was a language dictionary - I am proficient in (obviously) Luxembourgish, French, Chinese and Spanish - and several dilaects of Englsih e.g. American Englsih (Gray) British English (Grey) etc.

So I was thinking about teaching abroad, maybe in Taiwan for a year. Has anyone done this?

Make sure you have the right work permit (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/northern_ireland/5347156.stm).

Go for it! My lady was an exchange student in Brazil for 14 months and she says living in another country is a mind-expanding experience.

Yes, I've heard it is - I think it's just taking the plunge and doing it that's hard.

Yep, it is. Of course with this you'll want to do a little work up front, I'm not sure getting off the plane in Taiwan and setting up a sign reading "Language Lessons Given Here" is a good idea. ;)

I'm not that silly! I do know that 50% of teachers abroad are illegal etc - which I do not intend to be, so I had to look a bit further than www.teachabroadc.com and all those other eAgencies. I do sometimes leave the internet to go into RW

Haha can you ever be classified as being born with a silver spoon in your mouth in Luxembourg?

I thought everyone was pretty rich!

By the way, which Luxembourgian languages do you speak?

Dutch, German and also French, or just Dutch and French?

Oh and teaching in Taiwan would be fun, but I you need to get the right kind of permit and make sure it's the right thing for you to do.

My old geography teacher tought English in Brazil (Sao Paulo) and she said that it was great, but that it was a pretty scary place all in all, due to the gangs etc.

Organise who you want to stay with and where you want to be, and then get the rest sorted, and I'm sure you'll have a great time :)

I teach in Japan, so yes, I have done it.

The Taiwan market is hot right now, but you have to be careful of the fly by night companies who can and do screw teachers over. I recomend heading to Dave's ESL Cafe ( www.eslcafe.com ) for a good run down on what you need, how to find a good company, and best of all, jop postings.

And since I teach junior high, I'm afrad I don't have any broads.

A friend of a friend's working in Taiwan now. I just mailed my friend, and hopefully I'll get back to you w/ the latest.

Pretty much what I've heard as well.

Yeah, I hate it when people post those jops! ;)

My very first week here (back in the dark ages of the 1980s) my roommate got in a fight in a bar when a guy grabbed him, ostensably to see if it was true what they say about us Gaijin....

Living abroad is great, I did in my first year of Uni (I was 16 - it was fucking great).

I am leaving home again in November, to teach English and Computers to Russian Immagrent Children in Israel. Now I speak Hebrew, and they speak Hebrew, but in both cases it's not our mother tounge, so that might be very hard, but not as hard as a lot of peopel who teach abroad without a common language at all.

Anyway, I'm excited, and I don't know why anyone wouldn't want to do it while they have the chance...it's never going to be easier then it is, leaving gets harder as you get older and more settled.

:D Why do we want old-fashioned things like sea access - anyway, I've been to Belgium a trillion times, sometimes as a translator, sometimes on holiday, and sometimes just to get away from my sister - this was just before she was marrying, and filled the house with horrid lace and fluffles. eugh! Mind you, I'm looking forward to Prince Louis' wedding.

Lëtzebuergesch, or Luxembourgish (not Luxembourgian) does not divide into different languages. It is a language, not a dialect. We do, most, speak French and German, and they are the official languages. We are a trilingual country and do not use Dutch - I think however told you that got coonfused - we do not speak Dutch, but were in a Union with the Netherlands for a long time - until 1890, until we split as we wouldn't allow a Queen.

As to being pretty rich, we are actually a mostly rural nation, as we sit on the fertile Bon Pays/Gut Land, or Good Land. But industry has expanded over the last few decades.

And yes, i do know about the work and other permits- unlike 50% of people, I intend to go legally.
