George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and John Tyler

The current president ranks down there with Lincoln, (Andrew) Johnson, Hayes, and FDR.

JFK had charisma, courage but also diplomatic finess. George Washington and Abraham Lincoln were selfless leaders who began with a dream, a free nation and a united nation, respectively.

Why not? That's how democracy works. You vote a lunatic into office that actively supports oppressive regimes which kill people for their political views, you're partly responsible for those deaths as well. If you don't want that, don't vote.

JFK- wasnt reall that great of a man mostly famous for getting shot and probably in the top ten most known

Lincoln - kind of a looney guy. most people call him "great" for him freeing the slaves. but if you studied a little bit of real history on him you would know the truth about him. also famous for getting shot as well as freeing slaves

George Washington - gets props for being one of many that founded this country

Reagon - often nicknamed Raygun for his stories to the communist about the type of weaponry we had (actually worked to) credited for the downfall of the soviet union (you decide if that was good or bad)

JImmy Carter- ... ... peanut farmer turned politician with lots of charisma

Clinton - same as carter minus peanut farmer

I disagree. In Lincoln's case, Fedgov was plenty powerful to prevent the civil war. The congressmen simply lacked the will to adress the problems before the civil war.

As far as FDR goes, his "New Deal" did not resolve the Great Depression. Only mass government spending due to WWII did.

So? He was probably the best in the long run. He was definitley one of the most influential. The people may not have liked him, but he set us up for sucess in the Cold War. Partially because he started it. And Bush will soon be lower, but he's on the poll. And what do you mean by Camelot?

Harry Truman presided over the beginning of the Cold War, and the Cold War Consensus is generally accredited to his the agreements he hammered out with Republican Senator Vandenburg.

Certainly many of the animosities were born at Yalta, but open hostility had not yet taken form, and generally the populace of the US had positive attitude towards the Russians at that point.

I like some of what FDR did, don't like others internment camps dissmisal of racial issues.

Wilson had some good ideas its a shame none of them worked out, but since this is about ones we could like not judge by effectivness.

Lincoln managed to keep the country together so I guess this is a bit of a backtrack from my previous satement of not judging on "greatness" but oh well.

It means that if you get your worthless ass shot while holding the highest rank in the land, people will create this bizarre and wholly undeserved legend about your greatness.

And that poll sucks:
JFK's greatest accomplishments were getting a high speed lobotomy and very nearly getting the whole world blown to Hell because of his repeated mishandling of Cuba.
FDR and Lincoln aggressively expanded the Federal government, expanded Presidential power, and practically wiped their asses with the Constitution. All the while, the bungled their way through ridiculously one-sided wars.
Hell, none of these three even managed to survive to the end of their terms of office.

Now, Taft, on the other hand, there was a real President. Where others recklessly expanded their power, Taft settled for recklessly expanding. A move that made him drastically ahead of his time.

All the while, the bungled their way through ridiculously one-sided wars.
I can't stand how most people miss that. There was no doubt in any reasonable person's mind, nor should there have been, that the North would trounce the South and that the Allies would eventually crush the Axis.

Perceived difficulties in those wars are due, almost without exception, to the incompetence of those in charge, not to any actual challenge presented by an even more incompetent and economically inferior foe.

My opinions fwiw

George Bush - Don't even want to comment
William Clinton - Not great, not terrible at best
Ronald Reagan - Ok the first six years Not too bad for the last two
Jimmy Carter - Could have done more if he had not had congress against him
John F Kennedy - Well he got shot so he must have had someone thinking he was either real good (or bad for the country)
Dwight Eisenhower - A retired general, bad idea
Franklin D. Roosevelt - Some complain he was racist, at the time so were most of his comtemparies. (Thanks to him we have term limits on the president now if we could get them on congress)
Woodrow Wilson - Can you say income tax and the draft
Abraham Lincoln - Freed the slaves , right if they were from the southern states and over 21 however if they were from any of the union states or under 21 they were not set free, and when you complain about bush2 and the constitution Lincon basicaly suspended it , declaring martial law, suspending habeas corpus, ordering the arrest of 18,000 opponents including public officials and newspaper publishers
George Washington - Did ok at least he didn't want to be king (as some expected)
