or Nintendo. Frankly, since it would probably piss Sony off, Microsoft and Nintendo should be tied for first place in sales and profits. I mean, Nintendo learned its lesson. That's why they have Iwata as president instead of Yamauchi.

Even their president admitted that they're beginning to wane in hardware.

you gotta consider the big picture too. sony are pimping the blu-ray system, and the PS3 is going to be the big launching ground for that. the more units microsoft can shift before the PS3 is out, the greater market penetration HDDVD is going to have, and the more difficult a job blu-ray will have in controlling that market.
this is compounded, as i understand it, in that many more other (3rd party) hardware manafacturers have signed up to the HDDVD standard than blu-ray.
continued delays of the PS3 platform (its been pushed back 3 times now, right?) does nothing to benefit sony's overall plan, and the high media coverage of the problems with PS3 being with the blu-ray technology damages the credibility of the technology before its even out properly.

add to that the fact that sony are having to sell their PS3 at vastly inflated prices compared to the competitor consoles out there, and they'll have a hard time on their hands (even loyal PS fans i know are thinking twice about getting a PS3 due to the price and wait). all this made worse again as by the time the PS3 comes out xbox360 games will be on their second generation and quite probably be beating the launch PS3 games in terms of graphical 'wow factor'

personally i think the playstation brand's dominance atop the gaming heap is at an end. i've long been sceptical about Sony as a company (its always amazing how the same people who pupport to hate microsoft because of their 'evil corporate empire' can luuuuurve sony (and apple) to bits) and i do hope that the market balances out. i also hope that HDDVD wins the war as otherwise the DVD/film format will almost entirely be in the hands of one company, and thats just not a good thing.

Besides, I'm putting my money one Blu-Ray. At least on pornographic production company has jumped on the Blu-Ray bandwagon, and laugh all you want, but if all the porn houses go Blu-Ray, HDDVD won't stand a chance.

Nah, HD-DVD will win. They've got early market penetration in the X360 and HD-DVD players.

fair point about CDs. but don't forget Sony have had some great flops with trying to introduce (and control) their own formats, like MemorySticks and MiniDiscs. CDs worked because there was a real need for them and competition wasn't really there - it was a singular brand new technology carving out its own market. the HDDVD/blu-ray war is a battle over a pre-existing market, and neither technology is exactly needed, rather just a bit of an improvement on what we already have - no big leap in technology terms (unlike tape/LP to CD)

anyway, there are a number of key industries who use DVDs. porn is one of them. movies/hollywood is another. and games is the third. PC software will use whatever is tops. then there's hardware. i don't know enough about all of them to make an educated assessment, but AFAIK HDDVD is winning the hardware race. the games market is where the war will be, and hollywood seems to be waiting it out as far as i can tell.

as far as i understand, Blu-Ray also uses a different HD line-depth compared with HDDVD. the latter is 1080i but blu-ray is something different iirc. my new HDTV supports up to 1080i, so its possible from what i understand that blu-ray will be incompatible with a lot of TV hardware too. that doesn't bode well for the standard...

lets not forget that sony also lost the Betamax war :p

I am getting a PS 3 no matter what Sony's position in the market is. Quite frankly, I don't give a damn how it fares. I am hoping it will climb back to its seat of power, but all I really care about is playing the games, not which corporation devours which...

Personally, despite all the alarmist bullshit and whinging on part of Sony's critics, I don't think Sony is anywhere near suffering defeat. It's still fun to hear its opponents preach against it though. :) Morons. The truth is, you can only speculate about how well the PS 3 will do. It has to be released first, and given a year or so, before actual opinions can be formed based on facts...

Also, if anybody mentions the fact that Blu Ray has a higher capacity, I'll slap them with a trout. The HD DVD can hold, at it's peak, 90GB, compared to the Blu Ray's 100GB. By the time developers can fill these discs, we'll be using discs with 50TB capacity.

the porn video market is still worth billions, but good point - relying on this (probably) dwindling market, which will be shifting more and more to secure downloadable content, will/would not be a solid foundation for blu-ray.

Bill Gates sure. Microsoft gouges, sues and restricts every way it can to retain it's monopoly.

I'd run Linux but very few of the games I have run on it so I'm forced to buy Windows XP. When I build the computer that will have to see me through the next decade or so I'll have to buy Windows Vista if I want to play games on it. That is unless game developers push the boat out and start coding for other OS's (and I don't just mean OSX, it's not like there's may games for THAt either).

The end result of that process is that Microsoft can afford to lose 4 BILLION on the Xbox just so they can stand a better chance next time around. Given time they could literally buy the videogaming market.

EDIT - just for all you people who feel like coming in raving about hard drive partitions to run linux, I have about 1 GB of space left on my laptop. My next PC, sure I can do it. This one, no I can't.

As long as my DVD's will still play on whatever players I may buy in future, I don't care what wins. And I still have VHS tapes to record stuff onto :)
Oh, as for consoles, I hate the xbox controller compared to the PS2, which is essentially the difference that matters to me, as all games for each have good graphics, and gameplay isn't dependant on fancy DVD format differences.

I don't think the PS3 is going to shrivel up and die, but I feel there are two distinct possibilities:

1. It goes the gamecube route. Its still pretty relevant, and there are some pretty good games out for it, but its simply not the prevalent system. It just kind of scrapes by with its big names, and the majority of its innovative games won't be critically recognized.

2. Its sort of like the Xbox 360 is right now. The most expensive console out there, most people probably know one or two people with them, and their fun to play, but its not a household thing. Everyone talks about getting one, and most never do.

As for the name "Wii", I am reminded of the quote by William Shakespeare: "a rose by any other name would smell as sweet".

Not if they were called stinkblooms. I like the name Wii. It makes me smile. and the wii hands controllers. genius. The PC caters for all my kickass graphics needs, so the Wii is the only console im likely to buy.

Sony have screwed up big style. their console will be as good as a midrange PC from nowadays, which will be a budget PC in march. It needed to come out a year ago to make the same impact the last 2 generations of consoles had, and costing half its projected price.

They're lucky that theres so many fanboys who will buy it just for the name. Without an edge in either technology or price, it could be bad.

As for HD DVD and Bluray, I vote HDDVD, mainly because it has HD in the name, and dumb people will think its high def and Bluray isnt. By the time I get one though, theyl probably have dual format players, or one will be gone.

The CD is the only major format success of Sony in recent times. Their version of DVD and the Beta Video Cassette Machine both failed, whilst the format Toshiba pushed triumphed in both cases. Once again I expect the Toshiba format to come out on top.
