Revenge Attacks on Stingrays over Irwin death

This has got to be one of the STUPIDEST most IDIOTIC things I've heard in a long time. Let's go out and memorialize the death of a man who's life was about conservation, by killing animals in a moronic "revenge", and encouraging others to do so.

If Steve could see this he'd chuck the wobbly to end all wobblies.

Fears of revenge attacks on stingrays over Irwin death
By Devika Bhat and agencies

At least ten stingrays have been found dead and mutilated on Australia’s eastern coast in the last week in what conservationists believe could be revenge attacks for the death of Steve Irwin, the popular naturalist and television personality.

Irwin, known by his fans as the "Crocodile Hunter", was killed last Monday when a stingray barb pierced his chest as he filmed a new TV programme off the Great Barrier Reef. His death triggered an outpouring of grief in Australia and among thousands of admirers worldwide.

But now it is feared that fans' mourning has taken a new focus: stingray rage.

The dead stingrays have been discovered on two beaches in Queensland state, where Mr Irwin lived and ran his popular wildlife park, Australia Zoo. Two of the unfortunate rays, discovered today, were retrieved with their tails lopped off, according to local fishery officials.

Michael Hornby, a friend of Mr Irwin and executive director of his conservation group Wildlife Warriors, said he was concerned that the rays, which are usually docile creatures, were being hunted and killed in retaliation for Irwin's death, which he said, would go against everything that the television star had stood for.

"It may be some sort of retribution, or it may be fear from certain individuals, or it just may be yet another callous act toward wildlife," he said.

"We are disgusted and disappointed that people would take this sort of action to hurt wildlife. We just want to make it very clear that we will not accept and not stand for anyone who has taken a form of retribution. That’s the last thing Steve would want."

"Stingrays are beautiful creatures and play an important role for the environment. I hope everyone understands we have to protect wildlife now more than ever. This is what Steve was all about."

Stingrays are usually shy, unobtrusive fish that rummage along the sea bottom for food or burrow into the sand. When stepped on or otherwise frightened, a serrated spine up to 25cm (10 inches) long in the animal’s tail flares up.

The spines emit toxins that can kill small creatures and cause excruciating pain in humans. Few people die from the poison, but the spines can badly tear flesh and the wounds are prone to infections, including tetanus.

Rick Symons, government fisheries manager of animal welfare, said that officials were investigating the matter and warned that offenders could be prosecuted if evidence of cruelty was found.

Wayne Sumpton, from the state fisheries department, said there had been reports of similar incidents in the past after fishermen had inadvertently caught stingrays and cut off their tails to avoid being stung, but such incidents were not common and were not condoned by the authorities.

Meanwhile, Irwin's admirers appear also to be using technology to avenge the death of the daredevil star.

A website has created a game called Terri Irwin's Revenge, depicting the naturalist's wife firing at stingrays underwater. The aim of the game, which is being circulated via e-mail, is to kill as many stingrays as possible without getting hit, reports the Sydney Morning Herald.

However, the game has been receiving mixed responses from online visitors. "We should make it clear, this game is intended to be a memorial and NOT a funny parody," say its creators, who go by the names of Josh Tuttle, -altr- and Onic, on the website mofunzone.com

Mr Irwin was buried last week in the grounds of his zoo at a private ceremony after his family turned down the offer of a state funeral. A public memorial service will be held next week.

"No, Lisa, the moral of Moby Dick is be yourself."

Anthropomorphizing is silly, and leads to stupidity of the sort shown by the "revenge" killings. Nature neither "loved" nor "hated" Irwin, and certainly didn't kill him with malice, as you suggest.

Nature is totally impartial to all things. It's just plain fucking stupid to go out and kill these beautiful creatures because one famous man died. Animals lash out if they feel threatened, and the reason for feeling threatened can be completely unknown. It wasn't Steve's fault or the stingray's fault. He wouldn't have wanted people to go out and cut off stingrays tails, he was all about protecting animals, even the dangerous ones. Besides, Steve's death was one of four recorded deaths by a result of a stingray and there's only been 14 actual reported attacks. They're not aggressive animals.

You people are crazy. Stingrays are evil, they're are like aquatic bears. They were planning his death for years before this. If you support stingrays, you are a terrorist. I am going to suggest casual links between Stingrays and Osama bin Laden, then use it as a pretext to invade Iran.

Irwin was a freaking idiot the way he went after the animals he did. Im truely amazed he didnt get him self killed 7-8 years ago. it was a fluke that it was one of less dangerous animals he has messed with that actually killed him. I have swam with stingrays my self and unless there is a shark in area they are a hell of alot more calm and mellow than even my pet dog.

And this justifies killing animals in a misguided "revenge"? How?

HAY GUYZ I DIDNT READ WHAT HAPPEND SO I WILL JUST MAKE SHIT UP KAY!

Put less assholishly, he didn't "mess" with the stingray, as you would have known if you ever read even one of the articles about Irwin's death.
Not bad

Until and unless they actually find and question the person(s) who killed or cut the stingrays the motive for killing them is unknown. Since the tails are missing the motive might be profit. Selling the barb that killed Steve Irwin ten times over. Is it illegal to take stingrays in Australia? Not that that makes it OK to kill a dozen stingrays that you dont even eat, but they might actually look for the people killing the stingrays if they arent a legal fish to take.

The fact that he got stabbed through the heart then pulled the damn stinger out shows he had a set of balls LG himself woulda been proud of.

After taking a 25 cm barb through his heart with enough force to punch through a boat hull? That he even managed to grab the stinger is a mean feat.

I'd be a lot sadder about Steve Irwin's death if it'd been a car crash that had taken him.

It was an accident, and a tragedy, but it's not without it's useful lessons. Steve's voiceovers always included "don't try this at home," but his physical style was always very casual. No doubt, their were macho idiots out there who thought it looked easy, who believed from seeing Steve doing it, that picking up venomous snakes by the tail, or feeding crocodiles at close range, is piss-simple and just a matter of balls.

It's not just a matter of balls. It's really not. We've seen David Attenborough in countless natural settings, prodding and cuddling wild creatures. Lecuturing the camera with lions glaring at him in the background. He'll die of old age though, won't he? He gets across the same respect and wonder at the creatures he tells us about, but doesn't make it a macho thing. He takes risks, but as is now obvious, they are much more informed risks than Irwin took.

Here, little boys, are the wages of heroism. Here, the reward of fearlesness.
Read your books, write your thesis, and be like Attenborough. Or get hands-on, go for the fame, and leave a young family without you, like Irwin.
The brains, or the balls. Your choice.
