The global idolization of such a reckless figure goes on well past death.

Maybe those stingrays'll start empathizing with post-9/11 Muslims.

The apotheosis of Steve Irwin has begun, first animal sacrafices, then worship. I lament that we live in a culture that celebrates and deifies stupidity on such a scale as that man.

Do feel for his kids though, to share ~50% of their genetic code with that simian.

I don't agree at all with this sad celebrity obsession but what was so stupid about him? He helped animals and knew how to handle them but at one point he got unlucky, it could have happened to any diver.

As to the article....ten stingrays, eh? Im sure the World Stingray Preservation Commision is freaking out, 'cause ten stingrays is less than what some Amazonian tribes kill every day during the flood season. They hate the little buggers more than pirannahs.
I bet its pretty average in areas where people accidentally catch stingrays in fishing.

Anyone who deals with animals, and has some semblence of intelligence rather than hamming it up for the camera knows that you have to respect animals. Particularly the sorts that will kill you given proper motivation. He was reckless, and it didn't kill him for reasons I cannot explain.

Reckless, certainly not. Mr. Irwin knew what he was doing, he knew the risks, but it was something he loved. He knew that every day he was walking a tightrope, and in the end, he went out with his boots on. He loved to work with animals, he loved it from the early days of his childhood. That he was able to not only do that, but also make it entertaining, that he might more easily share his respect for animals with other people, was a gift.

In the end, we all die in some way or another, so, why not enjoy every moment of your life to the fullest?

at least reagan was a murderous asshole. irwin was just an effective conservationist, entertainer, and spokesman for animals usually written off as creepy/icky/scary/dangerous and then ignored or actively eradicated.

Tranq guns just don't make the same impression on camera as poking snakes with sticks and wrestling with crocs. It is however more effective and vastly less dangerous.

What gets me is, he's out there doing these very distressing things to animals and yammering about conservation efforts. Don't you think reasonable conservation starts with teaching people to respect animals and not to fuck with them?

The latter, since it's the kind of bold and blatant spectacle that actually gets the audience's attention in this day of "Reality Television" glutting the airwaves. Like I said in the other thread, with a demographics like this a state funeral for the cast of Jackass is certain to follow.

Actually no she didn't do that at all. She didn't let them hold her son but she did present him to other female chimps for viewing just like they do. Her son now works trying to stop animal smuggling.

As to chimps eating small children. Prove your claim.

I loved that show...though he always seemed to use more favors than he gained each episode. Maybe the ones we didn't see where really easy ones he did to bank favors...but really I was just in it for the car.
