The global idolization of such a reckless figure goes on well past death.
Maybe those stingrays'll start empathizing with post-9/11 Muslims.
The apotheosis of Steve Irwin has begun, first animal sacrafices, then worship. I lament that we live in a culture that celebrates and deifies stupidity on such a scale as that man.
Do feel for his kids though, to share ~50% of their genetic code with that simian.

God, its like Ronald Reagan all over again.
Somebody famous dies, and half of General feels the need to start talking shit about them as if theyre intelligent enough to hold an opinion about something as opposed to following some percieved fad.
As to the article....ten stingrays, eh? Im sure the World Stingray Preservation Commision is freaking out, 'cause ten stingrays is less than what some Amazonian tribes kill every day during the flood season. They hate the little buggers more than pirannahs.
I bet its pretty average in areas where people accidentally catch stingrays in fishing.

Stupid? Certainly not. Sitting at home and doing nothing is stupid. He was doing what he loved, and I only wish that I could be so lucky to have something that means so much to me, as to what animals meant to him.

If your idea of a good time is playing Russian Roulette you'd have about the same odds as him on any given day.
Anyone who deals with animals, and has some semblence of intelligence rather than hamming it up for the camera knows that you have to respect animals. Particularly the sorts that will kill you given proper motivation. He was reckless, and it didn't kill him for reasons I cannot explain.

Reckless, certainly not. Mr. Irwin knew what he was doing, he knew the risks, but it was something he loved. He knew that every day he was walking a tightrope, and in the end, he went out with his boots on. He loved to work with animals, he loved it from the early days of his childhood. That he was able to not only do that, but also make it entertaining, that he might more easily share his respect for animals with other people, was a gift.

Hey fine, can everyone stop acting like he was some kind of tragic hero now? Seriously the man was an idiot. Sort of like walking a tightrope without a net, sure if you feel like it go for it, but don't expect anyone to weep when your ass goes splat wether you enjoy it or not.

at least reagan was a murderous asshole. irwin was just an effective conservationist, entertainer, and spokesman for animals usually written off as creepy/icky/scary/dangerous and then ignored or actively eradicated.

Tranq guns just don't make the same impression on camera as poking snakes with sticks and wrestling with crocs. It is however more effective and vastly less dangerous.
What gets me is, he's out there doing these very distressing things to animals and yammering about conservation efforts. Don't you think reasonable conservation starts with teaching people to respect animals and not to fuck with them?
Jane Goodall, she's a person who respects animals. When she had a baby she didn't walk the kid around with the chimps, she kept 'em the hell away from the kid. 'Cause chimps tend to eat small children if they can.

If this is indeed a retaliation it is a very ironic one (just as his death was at the stinger of a normally very passive creature) since he was so deeply involved with conservation.
Do these people idolize him because of his works or his accent, excited attitude and propensity to put himself in dangerous situations and got out of them alive and unscathed usually?

The latter, since it's the kind of bold and blatant spectacle that actually gets the audience's attention in this day of "Reality Television" glutting the airwaves. Like I said in the other thread, with a demographics like this a state funeral for the cast of Jackass is certain to follow.

Then they came for the trade unionists

Then they came for the stingrays

Then they came for me

It's only a matter of time before the stingray community is attacked. It is not inconceivable that they might be rounded up and put into forced labour camps, for no other reason than they are stingrays.
Will someone please, think of the stingrays?

At least eight children have died in the past seven years in Uganda

have been injured. The children were found with limbs and other body

What idiots, it's not like killing them will do anything, and he wouldn't want them to kill the creatures anyway. You know how many people have died from stingrays on record?
"There had been only 17 recorded stingray deaths worldwide, with the first reported Australian death in 1969 when a barb punctured the heart of the victim, although there was no witness to the event."
http://www.datalounge.com/cgi-bin/iowa/forum/thread/gossip/3766360/page-1.html?findpage=3766613
Oh look, this little inanimite object right here causes more deaths than sharks, stingrays, and dogs combined.
When I called Burgess, he told me he had gotten this statistic off the Internet--specifically, from a widely reported press release from the British travel-insurance firm Club Direct, saying that "holidaymakers hit by falling coconuts will be guaranteed full cover under their travel insurance policy. The news follows reports from Queensland, Australia, that coconut trees are being uprooted by local councils fearful of being sued for damages by people injured by coconuts. . . . 'Coconuts kill around 150 people worldwide each year, which makes them about ten times more dangerous than sharks,' says Brent Escott, managing director of Club Direct."

Oh shit, guess we better stop going to tropical vacation spots.
Better watch out for these little fuzzy fellows too, I think they might be growing in power.
