Why has ZZ Top been overlooked?

I've seen plenty of music polls her on NS and it always seems like people fail to list ZZ Top as an option. I'm going to change that today. The Lil' old band from Texas is going to get the recognition it so richly deserves.

I said, lord, take me downtown,
Im just lookin for some tush.

I been bad, I been good,
Dallas, texas, hollywood.
I aint askin for much.
I said, lord, take me downtown,
Im just lookin for some tush.

Take me back way back home,
Not by myself, not alone.
I aint askin for much.
I said, lord, take me downtown,
Im just lookin for some tush.

It was probably a bit before most poster's time, and they're not quite as famous as some. Frankly I don't know much about their music.

there are at lest 50 to 200 bands who deserve to be on such lists. zz wern't bad, but polls i believe have a limited number of options, and they just weren't THAT outstanding. just one more or less ok band among many.

i could ask why has tangarene dream been overlooked. or moody blues. certain both far more outstanding then the zz. and i could name many many others.

I must disagree. Though Moody Blues were a very different kind of music than ZZ Top, I know I'd much rather listen to ZZ Top's stuff. Moody Blues doesn't even qualify as rock in my opinion.

I don't understand how anyone could "hate" any form of music, but ZZ Top are pretty low on my list of things I'd want to be trapped in an elevator listening to for all eternity.

And songs about sex quit being interesting or clever at around the same time people got used to the idea of watching it (the sex, not the shows) on HBO.

I was well aware of the time frame, and of the fact that singing about sex was just the coolest and most scandalous thing you could do at the time. I was simply pointing out that this is the 21st century and such lyrics are no longer shocking.
And, without the shock value, its just juvenile and self-dating.

One of the best and unique bands ever. Pop generations can't appreciate true music, true art and thats unnecessary of course. Those who wish to breed and die like bugs are free to do so. ZZ Top's sound is so deep that my old soul truly walks through true America while listening to it. especially like pieces in 'My head's in Mississippi'. What can I say, Im not a music expert to truly give them the value and satisfying definition they deserve but sincerely love their music and feel it. It got the blues

I just can't listen enough ZZ Top! especially the Recycler Album (1990)

Concrete and Steel
Hard and cold, like a street of gold,
It's easy to find but so hard to hold.
Smooth and strong but it won't last long,
When the rust sets in, she'll be good as gone!
Concrete, Concrete and steel.
It's like concrete.
Hey baby, what's the deal?
A heart of stone make you feel alone,
but what can you do when your hand is blown?
Hard as ice, it's like tumblin' dice,
before you fall for her boy, you better think twice.
Concrete, Concrete and steel.
It's like concrete.
Hey baby, what's the deal?
Dark as night, diamond bright,
Never seen such a strange delight.
Slick as glass, and just as fast,
You'll feel the pain, but it won't last.
***

Decision or Collision

She's so fine, makes me lose my mind,
I wish to apply my manhood.
I'll be glad to go to her pad and
Maybe the whole band could.
I got to make a decision
To avoid a collision.
She's so tuff, my knee's a little rough
From crawlin' on across her floor.
If she'd place an order I'd drink her bath water and
Not even use a chaser.
I got to make a decision
To avoid a collision.
Her lips are wet and I'd make a bet
She's been suckin' on her watermellon rind.
She's a picture of wealth and I know myself
That I'd take what she leaves behind.
***
My Head's In Mississippi

I'm shufflin' thru the Texas sand,

But my head's in Mississippi.

I'm shufflin' thru the Texas sand,

But my head's in Mississippi.

The blues has got a hold of me.

I believe I'm gettin' dizzy. (Spoken: Help me
now.)

I keep thinkin' 'bout that night in Memphis,

Lord, I thought I was in Heaven.

I keep thinkin' 'bout that night in Memphis,

I thought I was in Heaven.

But I was stumblin' thru the parking lot

Of an invisible seven eleven. (Spoken: What was I doin
out there?)

Where's my head baby?

Somewhere in Mississippi.

Last night I saw a cowgirl.

She was floatin' across the ceiling.

And last night I saw a naked cowgirl.

She was floatin' across the ceiling.

She was mumblin to some howlin' wolf

About some voodoo healin'. (Spoken: Mmm Baby.)

Not neccesarily, Garbage are obsessed with sex, and they're entertaining for the most part.
They don't just write songs about sex either.
My key complaint against ZZ Top is that their music just doesn't do anything for me.
My secondary complaints are the sex bit, and (as Todays Lucky Number so aptly demonstrates) their music has joined so many other bits of 60-70's culture as "legend" and, therefore, is followed by these stupid pretensions.
ZZ Top, art? Get real.

I see ZZ Top as one of the least pretensious bands out there. Legend? It seems like most folks today have never heard of them. ZZ Top are just fun, blues influenced rock and roll.

Singing about sex in the late sixties and early seventies was about as scandalous as it was when George Formby was signing about it in the thirties or Flanders and Swann in the fifties. ie. not scandalous at all, but just mildly amusing.

On that note, I have had this overwhelming urge to build a rat rod for the last six months. I haven't made any progress on my current project car, so I should totally start another. It only makes perfect sense...

After clean shaving for a century and military style hair which earned me the nick name of Soviet Commissar (one of many anyway) At the beginning of Univercity I had one of the ugliest ever possible beards. It was a goatee but more like egyptian style, going down down and down gathered and at the end with a silver ring(winged skull). And long elvis type (What are they called anyway?) sides (but nearly long enough to make them jew style) and it all pulled girls like magnet O_o'! I will never understand women.

Its same with many good things, at first they are über expensive and everyone rushes then after the hysteria ends you can get whatever you want for a nice cheap price. Add it many many years and its possible you will have it for nearly free.
