Something else is running on your machine. Maybe you need to reboot in Safe Mode and run your antivirus and antispyware.

If you are the sort of person (like me) who leaves the machine running all the time - shutting down, and leaving it off for a minute might cure it.

If you are the sort of person who runs a lot of programs simultaneously, that might be the problem - especially if it is an older machine.

If you are running one big program (I have one game that does it) that might be your issue... in which case, it'll probably always be a problem with that game.

FORMAT C:

When asked for confirmation type:

Y

restarting and clearing the memory might help. if it keeps doing it just running windows then it might be malware, or possibly the memory's on the blink and its time to upgrade

It could be a virus or malware hogging up all your memory, specially if this message appears when you're not running any particularly big application or something you don't normally run.

If it appears when you try to run a particular program or if you have less than 512 Mb of RAM then get more memory. It's not that expensive these days.

But check for viruses first.

Concern 1) find out what is using memory like mad (like mentioned possible viral possible windows bug)

Temporary solution

Right click on my computer
Go to properties
Click on settings under the performance heading

Go to the advanced tab
Under the virtual memory sub sections click change


Now there should be an initial size and a maximum set now the initial size by general rule should be 1.5 times the amount of ram you have and the max should be 2 times the initial

If this is NOT true this may be your problem don’t worry bout virus … if it IS true we are still going to bump it up now but re look into Concern 1

Alright now you can up your virtual memory here change the initial to 2 times your amount of ram and the max 2 times that

(So for example on my computer with one gig of ram mine originally should be 1.5 gb initial and 3 max … ideally. In your situation with the modified amount as described before it would be 2.0 initial and 4.0 max)

Remember in the virtual memory window the units are megabytes not gig so it will be in the thousands


This is a temporary fix in the end you should be cleaning out the machine and turning off unused applications rather then just upping the virtual memory

Press ctrl+alt+del.
Look at the processes tab and find out what is using all your memory.
If it is a specific application - close that app.
If not, post here and we will continue.

Just recently I have noticed that my c:\ drive which has the OS on it is getting smaller and smaller, thus causing problems with the Win386.swp (Win98SE here).

I used to have about 1GB of free space on it and everything was fine - now there's only about 300MB that the virtual memory file happily consumes completely.

Maybe you can readjust the position of the virtual memory file to another place with more space.

Rule of thumb is double the conventional memory size for your virtual memory file.

Other than that, the following programs (all free-ware, you'll find'em via download.com or google) might help you to find some other evil-doers:

1) Spybot - Search and Destroy
2) Ad-Aware SE Personal
3) SpywareBlaster
4) AntiVir Personal Edition Classic

Don't run more than one antivirus software at the same time.
Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware shouldn't be run at the same time, either.

True some of us have looked over that if your hard drive itself is filling up windows will decrese "Virtual" memory

The rest of us were looking at ram or the VM settings ... also good to check hard drive space avaliability

I think I just need to clear the cache more often. Whenever I reboot, there's no problem.

Something else is running on your machine. Maybe you need to reboot in Safe Mode and run your antivirus and antispyware.

Already done that with negative results. It's clean. :)

It sure does - Whenever I open more than let's say 5-7 browser windows in firefox, that annoying box pops up.

That'll get rid of the message, but the HD is still very slow compared to RAM and if you are constantly running out of it so much that the computer has to fiddle around with the virtual memory, then you're certainly going to see a nice speed bust by getting more RAM.

That is a temporary solution your HDD response is no where neer ram speed so "Virtual" memory is not the end all solution you will get a LOT worse performance out of applications on virtual memory

Ususaly the os only moves the little used stuff to VM ... if your MUCH used stuff starts flowing over ya will see a slow down

its not a full harddrive its you have to many things running at once most likely spyware that you dont even know you had on there. clearing cashe usually helps me for a little while but the most benifecial thing for me was to get a spyware detection and removal program since I did this I havnt gotten that message once in nearly 6 months, and my hard drive is and hass been full that whole time.

Damn, and here I am with 384MB of RAM (one of the chips is kaput, though, because while stating 384MB on start-up, when I check in-system, it's only 383MB).

But how much RAM do you have Eut? You shouldn't be using the paging file too much if you have a decent amount of RAM and don't look at too much porn.

I actualy set max at 2 and initial at 128

With as much ram as I have I rarly move over into VM and if I am not going to use it I dont want it to partition it

I would disable VM if I had your computer, or if Windows figured out that part of my RAM is unusable. I do not have a swap partiton and so far have been fine.

RAM doesnt actually function like hard drive the more you have the more you can do at once. when you turn power of or reset your computer it effectively gets wiped clean. I have 4g ram on my computer now and can run so many things at once and no have it slow down my computer even slightly its not even funny. when I had problem with computer slowing down I had something like 700 spyware programs running.

Wow, you're the only person in "real life" that I've seen using MiB and GiB (and, I imagine, KiB). I'd only seen it in one magazine before.
