Oregon ER Nurse Strangles Intruder With Bare Hands
Friday, September 08, 2006

PORTLAND, Ore. — A nurse returning from work discovered an intruder armed with a hammer in her home and strangled him with her bare hands, police said.

Susan Kuhnhausen, 51, ran to a neighbor's house after the confrontation Wednesday night. Police found the body of Edward Dalton Haffey, 59, a convicted felon with a long police record.

Officer Katherine Kent said homicide detectives have determined that Kuhnhausen killed Haffey in self-defense. She said a prosecutor is investigating but that the case is not expected to go to a grand jury.

Police said there was no obvious sign of forced entry at the house when Kuhnhausen, an emergency room nurse at Providence Portland Medical Center, got home from work shortly after 6 p.m.

Under Oregon law people can use reasonable deadly force when defending themselves against an intruder or burglar in their homes. Kuhnhausen was treated and released for minor injuries at Providence.

Haffey, about 5-foot-9 and 180 pounds, had convictions including conspiracy to commit aggravated murder, robbery, drug charges and possession of burglary tools. Neighbors said Kuhnhausen's size — 5-foot-7 and 260 pounds — may have given her an advantage.

Everyone that I've talked to says 'Hurray for Susan,' said neighbor Annie Warnock, who called 911. "You didn't need to calm her. She's an emergency room nurse. She's used to dealing with crisis."

Good thing she didn't just break him in two.

She's an ER nurse, all ER nurses are disgruntled. Or at least is so displayed by my mother who held the same job.

The attacker was 59, even I, being the small woman that I am, could deal with a 59 years old man.

Even more if I am THAT size.

It also helps that she knows how to restrict an airway.

My father worked as an orderly in Accident and Emergency for over twenty years. His favourite story was about a nurse he knew.

Two guys who'd been fighting were brought in. It was a fuck-up - patients who'd ben fighting were suposed to be routed to different hospitals, but not this time. Of course, the two guys - semi-pro rugby players - decide to continue their attempts to kill each other in the reception bay.

The nurse who was treating one got knocked down. She promptly got up, kicked the legs out from under the guy who'd knocked her aside, then swung a right cross straight to the jaw of the other guy - who promptly went down, mild concussion.

The punch line? Nurse Demisovic, who is a very nice lady most of the time, is slightly under five feet tall.

Don't mess with ER nurses.

My mother is about 120lbs, and giving her Five-foot-six is being generous. Eight years of a wife-beating drunk of a husband also graced her with a don't-give-a-fuck attitude and a strong hatred of woman beaters.

When I was maybe ten I watched her take out a rather large twenty-something guy who whacked his wife in a parkinglot. We'd been watching them argue for a few minutes when he just kinda casually slapped his wife. Complete strangers, my my sweet little mommy came unglued and soared to the rescue. Trust me, this guy didn't want -any- more of her.

My Mom + Full-on sprint + raised fist + Face = Dick in the Dirt

As for the story in the OP, I'm not suprised. This lady probably sees gunshots, multiple stab wounds, acid-trips gone awry and apeshit meth-addicts every single day. After a twelve-hour shift of that, some idiot with a hammer is only going to piss her off.

I'm sure if she had done this in the UK, they would say that strangling him was going too far.

After all, it takes a few minutes to strangle someone to death, and long before death sets in, there's unconsciousness.

They would probably say it was murder if not in the US.

They'd lose in court, though. If you do a manual strangle or throttle on someone (hands on neck), then by the time you've rendered the victim unconscious you've almost certainly crushed the windpipe; nothing but a timely tracheotomy will keep the victim alive.

So-called "sleeper" holds put pressure on the carotid arteries. The brain shuts down to conserve oxygen, though these holds are not too safe either; there have been several instances of people dying from a too-vigorous sleeper hold.

And they would say, "you're a trained ER nurse who can do a tracheotomy with a ballpoint pen, why didn't you try to save him?"

1) That's actually an urban myth. Trache tubes are significantly bigger than any pen;

2) Very few places require you to save someone's life, especially when they've attacked you. Letting someone die is not the same as killing them.

It was an intruder in her home, at night, with a hammer. What should she have thought he was there for, freelance charity carpentry?

Maybe she should have waited til he tried to crack her skull open with the hammer before doing anything. I mean, she'd be dead, but at least she'd be obeying the rules of engagement to your liking.

Yes, she's supposed to let him hit her first (or make a good attempt and miss). Otherwise, she can't do a thing to him.

Incorrect.

If someone has a weapon, you can stun them or knock them out, but you are not allowed to kill someone unless they are heavily armed and there is absolutely, well and truly no way of sorting things out in another fashion.

Strangling people will lead to their deaths.

Hence this is totally, 100%, out of order.

Well, does a hammer count as heavily armed? I mean, I know how you brits are about even kitchen knives nowadays.

Strangling people *can* lead to their death. Just like trying to "knock someone out" or "stun" them can cause death.

Unless you happen to be a martial arts expert, or maybe trained riot police, the use of nonlethal force to subdue someone is NOT an exact science.

Indeed. The phaser, with a stun setting, has yet to be invented.

Even a Taser can accidentally kill you, and it's designed to be a stun weapon.

So you would rather see her killed/violated/injured by an intruder because she, by law, is limited in defending herself? She should have asked the intruder nicely what his intentions were while offering him tea and crumpets first and trusted the answer of an individual w/ a violent criminal background?

Even phasers don't work as advertised 100% of the time. Because of electromagnetic interference from the quantum singularity emitting polaron rays into the atmosphere.

Exactly.

I, for one, would love to see what Yootopia would really do in such a situation. You know, on CCTV, on one of those real crime shows I saw in London.

So many incidents seemed to be of a perfectly healthy person being beaten nearly to death by one or two assailants, with the victim just taking it.

I could scarcely believe my eyes - that someone able-bodied would refuse to defend themselves, but it appears to be very common, and embodied in the law.

Perhaps, realizing that any strike back at their opponents might accidentally cause lethal injury, they chose the possibility of their own death, so as to remain out of legal trouble.
