I like Power Metal, personally.

I like a good cross ection, whilst I enjoy the classics such a black sabbath, I also love guns and roses(mind you they were long enough ago to be reasonably classic)
Anyway, the rule is, if its metal, I love it!

GnR = Not Metal.

Me?

I prefer Doom.
Or "Stoner Metal" such as Astroqueen....

But since Sabbath is my absolute favorite, and I believe they defy the over classification of metal, becuase they are really the first band to have done it.

It wasnt "Heavy Metal" until they did it.

Black metal. Not Burzum or Darkthrone clones though. They suck.

I also enjoy doom/goth metal, like My Dying Bride.

And since it was the first kind of metal I was really into, I will always like a good thrash band.

Why do there have to be subgenres? Can't bands play whatever they want and say it is their style of music? The Beatles didn't limit themselves, Zeppelin didn't limit themselves, Pink Floyd didn't. They took ideas and styles from other people and made it their own, instead of taking their own ideas and fitting it to a style.

Most bands that play in the obscure underground scenes that produce this multitude of subgenrey tend to not last long enough to progress into that point, alot of them shouldn't either. Do we really need to hear Slayer's new funk-jazz song? The Locust play the blues?

That's not to say some bands don't, especially in the indie rock scene, At The Drive-In and '...And You'll Know Us By The Trail of Dead' being examples. :D

I don't mind a smattering of most styles, and I have been conditioned to like Grindcore/Crustcore/Death (I lived with a frenchmetalhead for about a year. I don't like it, but i enjoy it).

The only genre I actually consistently enjoy is soundcore or Jazzcore. It sounds stupid, and it is. It is always quite random, and always great. Check out a french band 'Carnival in Coal' or 'Gronibard'. Beyond that, I don't mind the usual Nu-Metal and Black-Metal, but that isn't really anything special.

That'd be power metal. I really don't like it beyond humour value. That is to say, I don't actually enjoy the sound, but a keep a few tracks because it can be hilarious. Same reason I keep most 80's music.

I like a wide varity of Metal. Mostly it seems to center around German bands.

Rammstein is my top favorite band
Oomph! is close behind (only becase I got into Rammstein first)
Blind Guardian is always classy

I also like the following:
Rob/White Zombie I think both are great
Apocalyptica very classy rock
Audioslave - so far, I've only really listened to the first album
Disturbed - always good to play in the truck on high
Flogging Molly - can you drink to any other band?
Franz Ferdinand - I liked the first album. I don't know why, but it hooked me
Godsmack - Hard-hitting and very deep
Green day - Pre-political they were my heros. Brain Stew is a classic
Jimmy Buffet - When I was crusing around the Gulf Coast, I had to play this song
Mudvayne - Different sound, but I like it
Powerman 5000 - I forgot who the lead singer was related to, but I like the heaviness
Shinedown - Emotional, but not Emo. And much harder
Staind - The same
Tenacious D who can say no?

A lot of people say crap like this, and it gets on my nerves sometimes.

Subgenres exist as a matter of convenience. When telling someone about a band you like, their subgenre can give them a basic idea of the band's sound which you can further elaborate on. This is way easier than having to describe every facet of a band's sound starting with only the knowledge that they are a band.

I think of it kind of like the scientific classification of different species of animals.

A wolf is an animal. What kind of animal? A mammal. There are many varieties of mammal, go more specific. A wolf is a canine, etc.

Borknagar is a band. What kind of band? A rock band. There's a lot of variety within rock. Borknagar is metal. Well, there's still quite a bit of variation there, be more specific. Borknagar is a black metal band that makes extensive use of clean singing vocals and uses keyboards, and dispenses with the more over the top dark sound and imagery used by other black metal bands, etc.

See? Way easier to describe Borknagar as a black metal band and then talk about what sets them apart from others within their subgenre than to start with nothing. Of course, using the subgenre in one's description will only work if the person knows what that subgenre is, however, I find that usually I talk about bands with others who share similar taste in music.

Obviously, in this system, the band's name is equivalent to species name. Unlike the classification of species, however, bands can leave their "family" and join a new one. But still, I see the whole thing with subgenres as very much akin to the classification of living things.

I'm sure you wouldn't argue with the fact that there are subgenres within "Classical" music (though they tend to have happened over the course of time, instead of existing simultaneously). Or any other music for that matter. Why bother differentiating between Swing and Be-bop? Both fall within the Jazz genre. For that matter, why should we differentiate between Jazz and Country at all? They're both music that isn't

Thats not entirely true.

The Beatles didnt limit themselves, I'll grant you that, they sort of revolutionized the who game, and didnt limit themselves musically.

While all of these bands you mentioned will forever be among my favorites, Zep and Floyd most certainly did limit themselves, as most bands do, by thier own sound.

Pink Floyd has sounded more or less, as they do today, since the departure of Syd Barret.
They limit themselves, by thier own unique "niche".
When you hear a Pink Floyd song, you know its a Floyd song.

Floyd isnt going to change genres, and create a Metal album.

Well, I like swing, older jazz, mo-town and 60's music quite a lot. However, dancing always make me feel awkward, so I end up not being loose enough to do it well. Really a shame, since my girlfriend loves dancing.

But hey, I'm a musician, not a dancer.

Edit: Some of my friends mosh at shows, but I don't. I generally just go to the front row and bang my head or observe the band as they play.

For a pure metal genre, I quite like prog metal like Exit Ten, The Gathering, Pain of Salvation etc.

For the bastard child genre, I like metalcore. Call me a poser, call me a scenecore kid, but I personally love epic solos followed by bone crushing beatdowns.

With that said though, I like pretty much most metal excluding nu (Slipknot, Disturbed, Korn etc) and pop (BFMV etc).
