Which songs mean the most to you?

Pretty simple question: which songs mean the most to you? Was it a song your mother sang to you when she tucked you in? Does it have some religious or spiritual meaning to you?

Mine are all religious/spiritual. I was raised having these songs sung in the house, so there's that connection, also:

Amazing Grace
The Wonderful Cross
A Mighty Fortress is Our God
Be Still My Soul
Here is Love
All Hail the Power of Jesus Name
Be Thou My Vision
Glory in the Morning (I don't know if this is the name. It's the benedictal response at Easter every year at my church and I love it)
How Great Thou Art
Take My Life
All Creatures of Our God and King
Passion (by Kutless)

I like many others, but these are the top ones that I can remember.

If I can use an entire album as a "song", I'd say the entire White Album by The Beatles. That album especially, because it was the first Beatles album I listened to, and around the time I started listening to it I fell in love with a girl, and had some of the best times of my life. All the songs, even the sillier ones, have personal meaning to me that will always bring back memories.

Hmm... Well, I don't have a very strong attachment to many songs, since most of the songs of my childhood are from the time when I was forced to attend church, and therefore not particularly positive memories.

The few songs that I do have any connections with are:

- Materialist by Bad Religion: For a long time when I my father argued over religious things almost every day, this was the song I'd listen to after an argument as some sort of spite against him (really, it was never a big issue for either of us, but I hated the fact that he was so absolutist. It absolutely infuriated me.)

- When I'm Gone by Phil Ochs: This is a song that I've heard since I was very young, and it encapsulates a great deal of my life philosophy.

- Blowin In the Wind by Peter, Paul and Mary (I don't like the Dylan origional): My father used to play this when he was cooking, and I associate it with him.

I used to really like Above All, too. But then a friend pointed out that it doesn't fit with my Calvinist theology. According to Calvinism, Christ died for the glory of God above all. So, now I can't listen to the song without having a sad smile.

But, I'm glad you like you like it. It's a very beautiful song.

It's such a disappointment to hear it and be so excited about it and you buy it and then you actually listen to it so you can learn the words to sing to yourself while you're doing whatever and you hear the actual words and you say: "Well, I don't think I like these words." And you're disappointed for the rest of the evening. :(

Yeah, and then there are those songs like Imagine (http://www.lyrics007.com/John%20Lennon%20Lyrics/Imagine%20Lyrics.html) that I just love, but I really 1000% don't agree with a thing in the lyrics.

Oh, of course.

Someone actually played that song in church one week. A bunch of got up and left and others attacked the music director (even though he didn't have anything to do with the song). That person hasn't played since. Which, I don't know if that is good or bad.

Most of these mean things to me because when I'm hurt, the lyrics harmonize with my feelings in a way that feels as though someone played a beautiful chord. Some are specifically linked to a particular ex-relationship.

Evanescence - Tourniquet; Imaginary; My Immortal (almost the entire Fallen album, actually, but those songs in particular)
Die Ärtzte - Nichts in der Welt, Der Tag
Within Temptation - Overcome; Angels; Memories
Live - Overcome
Apocalyptica - Bittersweet
Rammstein - Ohne Dich
Depeche Mode - Enjoy the Silence (this song is so meaningful now I refuse to listen to it; it hurts too much)
Krazy Town - Butterfly
L'Âme Immortelle - Bitterkeit, Fallen Angel, 5 Jahre
Placebo - Special K, Every Me Every You
Nightwish - Ever Dream
A-HA - Crying in the Rain
Rufus Wainwright - Hallelujah

Album:
Layla & Other Assorted Love Songs - Derek & The Dominos

Song:
Brothers In Arms - Dire Straits

American Pie, and Ooh La La or as it's probably more commonly known When I was younger
Layarteb

The Unforgiven - Metallica
Down with the Sickness, Overburdened - Disturbed
Damaged, Waffle, Live Again, Shadows in Red, Ugly, all by Sevendust
My December - Linkin Park

Lots of them here, there, everywhere...Too many to list, just wrote what was on the top of my head.

Too many songs mean too much. "Elanor Rigby" by the Beatles has some meaning, as does the entire "Farmhouse" album by Phish.

And a lot of other songs, too many to list, but those stand out.

If you mean 'which songs mean the most to you currently' then I'd have to say that the following two have been occupying my headphones the most over the last week:

Psychobabble - Frou Frou
All I Need - Radiohead
Delator
11-09-2006, 05:56
Blind Guardian - When Sorrow Sang
In Flames - Another Day in Quicksand
Mudvayne - Prod
Nine Inch Nails - Somewhat Damaged
Sevendust - Shine
Stabbing Westward - Waking Up Beside You
Staind' - Excess Baggage
Tool - Parabol/Parabola

There are many others...but those were the first to come to mind.

Personally, I'm gonna go with Billy Idol's Adam In Chains (http://www.lyrics007.com/Idol%20Billy%20Lyrics/Adam%20In%20Chains%20Lyrics.html). And no, I won't say why.

I don't really have any all-time favourite songs, but there are a good few that mean a lot to me :

Melanie - Die Puhdys
Wuensch dir was - Die Toten Hosen
Quand Rose va - Beau Dommage
Chop Suey - System of a Down
Flowers - Emilie Simon
ABBA - Cassandra
Duke Ellington - The A-train

Songs I might find myself singing now and then (and no, I would normally not admit to that) :

Die Gedanken sind frei
Lorelei (Ich weiss nicht was soll es bedeuten)
Ballade des gens heureux
Scarborough Fair

Other pieces of music :

A night on Bald Mountain - Moussorgsky
Requiem - Mozart
The sleeping Beauty - Tchaikovsky

"Luka" -- Suzanne Vega: I've explained this more than once. No need to rehash it.

"Against the Wind" -- Bob Seger: Gets more and more meaningful as I get older (I just turned 39 yesterday)

"Running on Empty" -- Jackson Browne: Same reason.

"Imagine" -- John Lennon: I don't care what the rest of you think, it's a beautiful song, with beautiful sentiments.

"Beautiful Boy" -- John Lennon: Used to sing this to my daughter (as "Beautiful Girl"). Kind of hurts now, because I don't get to see her anymore.

"Doctor My Eyes" -- Jackson Browne: Sums me up pretty well.

"Fire and Rain" -- James Taylor: One of the best-written songs ever.

Except for Luka and beautiful boy, we seem to have similar tastes in music (and for similar reasons as well) Especially "Doctor My Eyes" and "Against the Wind".

I have to add The Rolling Stones "Paint it Black" and there are a great many others That I just don't have time to list.

Reel Around The Fountain by The Smiths reminds me of a certain girl that played a big part in my life.

But the self-titled album by cLOUDDEAD is very close to my heart. It reminds me of my early teenage years, my hometown and the close-nit group of friends that I had at the time. I’m still friends with pretty much all of them, but we’re spread out all over the country now. If I had to pick out a specific song from the album, it would be Jimmy Breeze (Part 2); especially the line:

Sunset is an all day process, sunset is an all day process.

This one is brilliant as well...

Fidel and Che Guevara lay in a ship, at anchor in the harbour
Waiting for the evening tide to rise and bring high water.
Bound for Cuba she must go across the Gulf of
Mexico and The Caribbean Ocean
She's carrying a human cargo 83 good companeros
Each one burning with determination to be free

Against Batista, The Fidelistas, courage was their armour as they fought at Fidel's side with Che Guevara.

Five days out from Mexico these Companeros
Landed on the Cuban beach Los Colarados
Fidel said this year will see our country and our people free Or else we will be martyrs
We've only guns enough for 20 the enemy has arms a plenty
Meet him and defeat him and he'll keep us well supplied

Five weeks later in the Canyon De La Rio
Fidels army was reduced to 18 Companeros
Hungry, weak and unafraid, learning revolutions trade in the high Sierra Maestre
Where the mountain winds did blow bearing seeds to sprout and sow
New crops in Cuban soil that marked the death of slavery

Companeros, tu valaderos
Courage was their armour as they fought at Fidel's side with Che Guevara

They made their way across the peak of El Torquino
Joined by bands of volunteers and the men from Santiago
They faced Batista's tanks and trains, drove them back across the plains, from the high Sierra Maestre
They drove the gangsters from Los Vios straight across the Cordileros
Santa Barbra fell to Che Guevara and was free.

The fire lit on that Cuban beach by Fidel Castro
Still shines all the way to Terra del Fuego
Sparks are blown upon the breeze, people rise from off their knees when they see the night is burning.
It blazes up in Venezuela, Bolivia and Guatamala
Lights the road that we must go in order to be free.....

Pretty simple question: which songs mean the most to you? Was it a song your mother sang to you when she tucked you in? Does it have some religious or spiritual meaning to you?

certainly "my little sunshine" as my mum used to sing that to me when i was having a hard time at school. looking back, those events have a lot to answer for for how i am today :(

then there's ones that spoke to me last year at uni when i was in the midst of the depression i'm now on treatment for. Empty Room by Crowbar was a favourite, as were many songs by Korn off the Issues album. i'll quote some below:

I've tried to hide
Hide from so many things
At times I've lied to myself
I've built a room
I can't see anything
An empty room
I'm breaking out
There is no door
No sunlight coming in
Just concrete walls and loneliness
Footsteps of doom
I hear alone at night
This empty room
I'm breaking out
Now I'm on my way

the last line there always gave me hope in suicide - like to be on my way out of the terrible room i built around myself, to break out, was to die. it spoke to me a lot.

Keep knocking
Noones there
Pouring down
Near people

My head
By myself
All alone
Ripping my head off
I hurt so bad inside
I wish you could see
The world through my eyes
It stays the same
I just wanna live again

Keep hoping
Nothing to spare
So my life
Isn't quite there
Feel like a whore
A dirty whore
Such a whore
Dirty

My head
By myself
All alone
Ripping my head off
I hurt so bad inside
I wish you could see
The world through in my eyes
It stays the same
I just wanna live again

I'll die again
I'll die again
I'll wilt again
Into you
You dirty little fuck
Dirty little fuck
You dirty little fuck
Dirty little fuck

You dirty little fuck
I will take it

I hurt so bad inside
I wish you could see
The world through my eyes
It stays the same
I just wanna live again

that one pretty much speaks for itself, too.

since then there are songs that mean things to me, such as One Day by Gary Moore, but i'll be honest in saying that the positive feelings that song connotates pale in comparison to how much i needed those two songs above to speak to me at that time in my life.

They don't. Kyrie Eleison by Mister Mister is a very cool piece of rock with a Christian theme.

As for what's important to me:

Young Americans by David Bowie.
Who Wants to Live Forver? by Queen
Take it Easy by the Eagles
The Traveller, Don't Answer Me and Standing on Higher Ground by The Alan Parsons Project.
In Your Eyes by Peter Gabriel
Domino and The Brazilian by Genesis
Inner Universe by Yoko Kanno.
Beethoven's Choral Symphony
The 1812 Overture.
