Buying a laptop.

I need some advice, I am thinking of buying a laptop but I want it to be fast with high ram.

I also want it capable of playing good games. Maybe not the absolute latest games with amazing graphics, but at least capable of being able to run for example halo.

Maybe that means I can't buy a laptop with an integrated graphics card, I dunno?

Oh and one more thing, I want it to be as cheap as possible.:D

So can you help me out?

When I went to get my cheap ass broken Gericom computer fixed and discovered that it was irrepairable, Sony Vaio was on the list of things I shouldn't buy, according to the repairman. They're apparently cheap computers with a fancy casing.

And as for suggestions of laptops I should buy?

You are apparently running on the delusion that laptops are dekstops. They arn't, they never will be. Just look for a laptop from HP or Compaq with Core Duo and a 1gig of ram. Hope you are planning to spend in excess of 1k.

Hehe, my laptop is practically a desktop, or it was when I bought it. That was over two years ago now, though.

And it's an HP running the AMD Athlon 3400, nice chip, but it's old now.

A very expensive lappy is only as good as a cheap desktop.

Afraid not.
Dont expect anything newer than Diablo to run well.

Look into Dell's XPS lineup. Do yourself a favor and check out the Dell Outlet. Not just Dell, Dell Outlet. That's where they sell refurbished, cosmetically blemished and canceled order PCs. YOu can get some good deals there. *nod*

As an employee at Cicuit City, one that works on both desktops and laptops, here is my advice:

Get an HP pavillion, one with an AMD 64 dual core processor, at least 2 GHz speed and 1GB RAM, though 2GB is better. Minimum of 80 GB harddisk space. Graphics: either the nVidea (really good) or an ATI (good) graphics card. Most laptops nowadays come with built in wireless, but make sure. I'm a fan of the 17", since it comes with a number pad seperate from the main keyboard but still part of the base.

Hey, that's pretty much my computer, only newer.

I'm running an HP Pavillion with an AMD 3400 processor, half a gig of ram, the nVidia card and a 15.4" screen. It's served me nicely for the last 2+ years.

Better start checking the trash to see if some one accidently threw out a good laptop.

HP is the cause of everything that is wrong with the world.

They don't properly filter their intake fans, and as such the componats degrade quite quickly. An HP is the only computer I've ever seen where the case broke from normal use. But they also cut corners inside. They reduce the quality of the componants to make it cheaper, but they know not to lower the stuff that n00bs can compare, like vram.

O, and less he plans on compiling his own kernel or something, he is not going to notice the difference between a 1GHz CPU and a 2GHz CPU.

Well thats strange, I had an old laptop which was a bit rubbish but it was only 400 pounds and it could run games like Medal Of honour and operation flashpoint quite well. It was resonably fast, probably faster then the computer I am on now.

Never had any of those problems myself.

MY advise:
Save up, and get a Lenovo z60T or whatever the equivalent is when you have enough cash.
I got one, and it kicks ass. The wireless radio it comes with is more powerful than most of those little wifi cards you can buy, and it can run most games up to 2001 or so, but it signficantly cheaper than many gaming laptops. It can play Morrowind with minimal lag, so nothing else matters ;)
Its moderatly expensive though, I got mine as a graduation present. Make sure to shop around though, some places are up to $600 cheaper than others. We got ours at Californiacomputing or something like that.
Just as long as you dont mind the evil Communist Chinese Computer o' Doomz :P
