Yeah, right.
Ghanem was arrested Thursday at Detroit Metropolitan Airport after Transportation Security Administration officers detected the knife "artfully concealed" in the book, airport spokesman Michael Conway said.
Someone had carved out the inside of the book and placed the knife inside it, said Ghanem's attorney, Nabih Ayad.
"He said he didn't know where the knife came from," Ayad told the Detroit Free Press.
Sure he didn't. As a side note, one of the things you look for to give people extra screening and extra questioning is the one-way ticket away from their current home. If he's just going home to get married, and he has a one-way ticket, it merits extra questions, as the one-way ticket is invariably more expensive (bought twice) than a round-trip ticket.

Almost all of our compliance with any law and regulation is voluntary. Because of that, the baggage police can seem to be successful. It's the height of arrogance to assume that we can find every single knife, butane lighter, can of Coke, etc, with a screening process that is devoted to finding the implements of crime, rather than the criminals. We got lucky this time.

That's why I think pulling him aside if you find he's travelling to a wedding on a one-way ticket is a good idea. They don't ask these questions, but they should.

Hid it in a book? He is obviously too clever and too dumb simultaneously. You can get stuff on a plane with little effort, everyone and their mom has who have tried.

How in the world do you intend to sneak past a security checkpoint in an airport?
The amount of security and surveillance, not to mention the sheer number of doors that require an access pass and an access code would make it impossible.
Also, the guys who hijacked the planes on 9/11, they got on bold as day, so I would highly suggest you do your bloody homework before you make any more oversimplified statements like this one.

If I had to sneak past security, I'd use a big potted plant as cover and carry it in front of me so if anybody looks, all they see is a potted plant shifting in the breeze. :)

Wrong again. In the United States, they'd put a rag on their head, not shave for several months, pray frequently and make damned sure they were identified as a Muslim and an Arab. Due to the wisdom of our Democratic past Secretary of Transportation, Mr Mineta, we are not allowed to give Muslims or Arabs any special examinations or searches. In fact, searching them at all, can be construed as profiling and we all know how bad that is.
One of his gems is quoted:
Asked on 60 Minutes if a 70-year-old white woman from Vero Beach should receive the same level of scrutiny as a Muslim from Jersey City, Mineta said, "Basically, I would hope so." Asked if he could imagine any set of circumstances that would justify ethnic and racial profiling, Mineta said "absolutely not."

I'm not sure the detector would pick up the snake. Better to brandish the snake aggressively all through the airport, maybe one in each hand.

Did you read the rest of the post? Arabs and Muslims have been given a pass by the Transportation Department. Why wouldn't a terrorist take advantage of that fact?
And no, I don't have it in for Muslims in general. Just the young Arab males that are the most likely to commit terrorist acts. And yes, I watch them very closely.

Well, for those who are interested, here's the standards for what has to be cut out of a Bible to sneak illicit contraband around in.
Anti-tax statements - a note with instructions on it.
Anti-drug statements or instructions to hate your parents - A tab of acid.
Anti homosexuality statements or instructions not to wear different colors of chothing - an unrolled joint.
Demands that you perform animal sacrifices - a bottle of pills.
Demands to care for the poor - shampoo and a bottle of coke.

No, they get the same screening as you or I would. Given that I was recently forced to remove every liquid item from my bag before I could take it as hand luggage (and they searched it thoroughly along with everyone elses) I'd say that's generally plenty.
If I really wanted to take a blade aboard then I could do it with the resources I have to hand. It might not be a metal blade but lethal enough nonetheless.

Well, the baggage police have pulled the wool over at least one pair of eyes. I'm glad you think they are up to the job they are required to do.

It loses some of the effect if it has to be explained. Just keep alternating between the top and bottom and you might understand.

The guy said that Arabs would be searched as much as anyone else. Personally I agree with Arab profiling (within reason, see below) but you're just building straw men here.

I read a post by you six weeks ago in which you said that all Muslim-looking people should be automatically barred from flights upon sight and detained for questioning.

Look at the website its from, Coxandforkum. Just your standard 9/11 demagogery aimed at inciting racism. I found another article on it that said what amounted to "if your anti-war, your pro-jihad"

You read wrong. I have always said that young Arab males are the ones that deserve special attention. When young Arab females start committing terrorist acts, add them to the list.

Yes. Apparently they did not search him either, and did not find the knife.

And if a member of your own race commits a terrorist attack?
I think this has a lot more to do with race than most people believe. Islamophobes are just using religion as a fig leaf for their naked racism. If members of the Kahane Chai had flown those planes into the WTC, would people be calling for the racial profiling of jews? Of course not.

They have, at least in Israel.

Have any known hijackers ever boarded the plane which they hijacked by using a one way ticket? Is money that tight in terror that they have to try to scrimp on airfare even though it looks suspicious?
