We all know that you're trapped in the land of the rising sun (or whatever orientalist bullshit cliche is currently en vogue), so your mission, should you chose to accept it, is to fill us in on the current fantastic tuneage raking the underbelly of your adopted home. We know you're righteously pissed off and ready to smite them what produce J-pop, but ther must be some rumblings in the underground worthy of note...

Zeni Geva*, The Boredoms, GISM, Merzbow**, Ruins***, Lip Cream and Teengenerate are all very well and good****, but getting a touch old to these jaded ears. What should we be picking up on the radar from your corner of the world nowadays?

Sidenote: I don't expect you've come across any of the Malasyan Oi! that was making a few waves a few years back? If so any pointers?

* much as we love 'em.

** much as we love his unlistenable keek/oeuvre even more.

*** fucking yes. What else can I say?

**** and for that matter Electric Eel Shock, but they (a) appear to have relocated to the UK, and (b) seem to be much better live than on record.

I'm not that much into the underground scene - although I have friends who are. And not all J-pop is evil crap, just 99% of it. ( Did really just say that?!?)

But for some of my faves:
From the indie/underground/punk side:
Melt Banana
Mad Capsule Markets
Shonen Knife
Genbaku Onanies
Blue Hearts
Boris
Gauze
Falsies On Heat
Last Target
The Overflow
Devil Kitty (the only visual kei group I like much)
Zazen Boys (Buddhist chant influanced punk)

On the pop/rock/mainstreamish/other side:
Shang Shang Typhoon
The Boom
Pizzicato Five
Loudness (25th anniversary tour this year? Gahhh. I feel old now. :( )
Bafuku Slump
Seagull Screaming Kiss Her Kiss Her
SEIKIMA-II (His Excellency Demon Kogure, former vice president of hell, speaks excellent English and is funny as hell. Many years ago, I saw Larry King interview him, and I just about pissed myself.)
The SEX MACHINEGUNS
Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra
Kazuki Tomokawa
Puffy AmiYumi (embarassinly, yes, I like them. :))
Diamantes (Latin/Okinawan pop)
Orquestra de la Luz (Salsa)
Orquestra del Sol (Salsa)
Kanabia

I haven't seen Balzac mentioned. They should be on people's lists.

They're alright, but not really one of my faves.

Envy is love. Wow, that sounded weird.
Melt Banana is awesome too, whenever you feel like throwing yourself against a wall or something. Seriously, Melt Banana rules.

Minimoni telefon a rin rin rin....
(My good friend who had to leave earlier this year, was a major minimone freak. You haven't seen Karaoke until you've seen a beer swilling, Skoal chewing, NASCAR loving, hard core Auburn frat boy, husky Pennsylvania redneck with a real old time flatop haircut singing that one. A spectical to behold!!!)
