Good Muslims Can't Have Cats

And that includes Mohammed, who evidently is no longer considered an example of a good Muslim. I find this hilarious in the extreme (which is is).

I guess they have to watch out for that evil emanating from pets.

JIDDAH, Saudi Arabia - Saudi Arabia's religious police, normally tasked with chiding women to cover themselves and ensuring men attend mosque prayers, are turning to a new target: cats and dogs.

The police have issued a decree banning the sale of the pets, seen as a sign of Western influence.

The prohibition on dogs may be less of a surprise, since conservative Muslims despise dogs as unclean. But the cat ban befuddled many, since Islamic tradition holds that the Prophet Muhammad loved cats — and even let a cat drink from his ablutions water before washing himself for prayers.

This kind of puritanism may be based in religion - but the desire to dictate how people should live is the main motivation - religion only gives them a starting point.

A more realistic situation that reproduction will be banned....either way, I don't care.

That's very odd indeed. I distincly recall an old tale about how Mohammed cut off the right arm of his tunic in order to perform prayer, as his cat had fallen asleep inside it and he did not want to wake it.
Ah, well, it's the same with all religions, isn't it? People will use them to promote their agenda, regardless of the original message...

I guess they might be figuring that if they are "more holy than Mohammed" they'll get something extra for their piety.

I also thought Mohammed cut off the hem of his robe rather than wake the cat that was sleeping on it.

Oh well, fundamentalists of any ilk make no sense.

mohammed even cut off the sleeve of his robe so as not to disturb the sleeping cat upon it. I think Saudi Arabia is reading their own interpretations into the Koran. Like was brought up initially, Mohammed....their prophet..had and loved cats. I have and love cats, and I have yet to see any evil out of them. They are extremely people oriented, affectionate, and loyal much like dogs are.

Ah, no.

Cats regularly go inbetween households in urban settings, they go to any place that has food. Animal psychologists have studied cats and found them to be domineering, you know that cute rubbing or the head on your ankle? there are scent glands around cat's ears; its marking you as their territory

thsts crazy, surley if they are 'good' muslims they cannot be greater than mohamed. That would be blasphemy. If mohamed loved cats then this rulw is silly. Its just another case of leaders manipulating peoples strongly felt religious beliefs in order to control people.

Since my uncle is actually in Saudi at this point (running a private aquarium for a Sheikh, I believe), I'd like to impart some information about these "religious police".

He says that they're basically unemployed men who make money by extortion and by mugging women under false religious pretences.

He says that most people in Saudi are actually extremely nice and polite, but that these guys are basically bitter that despite the fact that they're Arabs, they're faring much worse than a lot of the African immigrants who come over and work in the compounds, and due to having little or no education or prospects, they choose to work, basically, as gangsters under false pretences.

These guys will ban extra things for time to time to keep the revenue flowing, basically, if they don't feel they're earning enough...

Shame, really.

I have four cats, each with a distinct personality. And while they follow instinct where food and heirarchy are concerned, I've found them to be affectionate, intelligent and loyal. Bonnie is the Diva - she has one person she loves, me, and tolerates the rest. Clyde is also known as Bubba - he adores my daughter and follows her like a puppy. Persephone wants to be an only cat, but will tolerate the others to be around my daughter and me. Emma loves everyone. When I had a dog, they included her in their play and they all slept in a little pile.

And I'm rather glad that my cats mark me as their territory.

Because the self-appointed religious police want more money and want to mug people with cats as a new target...
