Technically Ineffective, But I Suppose Some May Enjoy It

While I am more of a practical, technical person who would rather see him actually shot during capture, along with a few dozen of his closest associates, I suppose that there are some people in this world who get satisfaction out of hanging people in effigy (I don't).

At this point, if he was killed in exactly the same way as Zarqawi (500 pound bomb curb stomp, with a few minutes of agonizing consciousness before succumbing to fatal injury), I would be quite pleased.

"Group Announces Event Featuring Mock Hanging of bin Laden," from the UAC:

In commemoration of the September 11th, 2001 terrorist attacks on America. The United American Committee will hold a rally featuring a mock hanging of Osama bin Laden on Sunday, September 10th in front of the King Fahd Mosque in Culver City California at 10980 Washington Blvd beginning at 4:00 PM.

CULVER CITY, CA – August 31st, 2006 (UACWIRE) – Among numerous events across the nation to commemorate 9-11, one event in the Los Angeles area will feature a mock hanging of Osama bin Laden, and will give attendees an opportunity to throw old shoes at the effigy. The hitting or throwing of shoes at a person or object is one of the greatest insults within the Islamic world. One aspect of this event which is also unique is the location; The event, organized by the United American Committee, will take place in front of the King Fahd Mosque at 10980 Washington Blvd. in Culver City, California.

So it's OK for US to burn OBL in effigy but wrong when Bush or the American flag recieves the same treatment from people who feel wronged by America?

Good to know.

As far as I can remember, burning the American flag is perfectly legal in the US.

Like hanging OBL in effigy, some may get upset about it, but it's still legal.

This seems like blatant provokation to me, Hopefully common sense will prevail among culver cities muslims...

Anyone else disturbed that a common ME practice is being exported to america?

Maybe their trying to spark a riot, and create a massive backlash against people of ME background. After looking at the site , it looks like the HUAC back in McCarthy's day...

Are you thinking about driving over to Culver City to watch? Maybe have a little Bar-B-Que a little beer, this'll be great....

Why are people so hell-bent on pissing off muslims? What are they hoping to achieve?

I can understand hanging an effigy of OBL but why in front of a mosque? they're going out of their way to incite these people...

It's no better or worse then what the British do to Guy Fawkes... Just more pertinent to current affairs is all. In fact I’d figure that the Brits are a lot more hardcore in this respect seeing as Fawkes failed to blow anything up but they still burn him every single fucking year.

Why in front of a mosque?

Maybe the Muslims who go to that particular mosque have a pro-Osama, pro-9/11, or anti-America stance?

Why in front of a mosque?

Note the name of the mosque; it's the King Fahd mosque, named after the king of Saudi Arabia. Of course, Saudi Arabia, particularly during the reign of King Fahd is notorious as the origin of many of the 9/11 hijackers, the birthplace of OBL, and is also a supporter of terrorism and a source of funding for radical Islam movements.

It's been speculated that the real reason we do it is to remember that we still have the option of trying to blow parliament up.

My theory is we just like the fireworks :D

It's a pretty moronic way to spend your time, but it's their right to be idiots and to demonstrate it.

The choice of location in particular seems to defy common sense, but again, it's their right to be assholes.

Well, its 'un-American' (these days anyway) to go lynching "blacks", attack hispanics, natives, catholics and Jews. Gay bashing is looked at aghast by a large segment of their society. However a nice wide group including those who should know better can gang up and 'hate on' muslims with a certain amount of mainstream acceptance. I presume it was the same in the cold war era with Russia/communism.

I've never understood why we have to systematically go through every oppressed race/religion/ethnic group and get rid of prejudice for that specific group. Why can't we just say "its wrong to hate or judge someone solely on their race, religion, sexual preference, nationality, color, pirate/ninja affiliation? Why do we have to go to specific groups to get rid of prejudice?

How can there be a 'great' gun store in California? No one can own anything lethal.

I hope some of the worshippers at the mosque participate in the hanging and shoe throwing in solidarity with their other American brothers and sisters.

Not literal burning, just acting out an execution. Makes it all OK then, carry on.

Maybe they do want to get a certain message across. The same sort of message the Brownshirts got in the habit of getting across in Jewish neighbourhoods in Germany prior to World War II. I guess this makes Kimchi into Chamberlain this time out.
