Some Pakistanis upset about American bikini model showing off her Karachi

This American broad who was born in Karachi, Pakistan entered a contest in China. The problem is she entered as a Pakistani in an effort to "project the nation as a modern one". Anyway, some Pakistanis are bent out of shape.

I can kind of see their point. She's a non-citizen claiming to represent their country. That's kind of dishonest, but still, Pakistan needs to lighten up about women entering bikini contests and crap. A little fun pop culture stuff might do their people some good.

Mumbai, September 8: A prize-winning bikini competition contestant, who claimed to represent Pakistan, sparking some outrage across the border, says she wanted to project the nation as a modern one.

Officials in Pakistan, which does not hold beauty pageants, said on Thursday they were investigating how Texas-based Mariyah Moten, 22, entered a "Miss Bikini" pageant in China last month as a Pakistani contestant.

Pakistan-born Moten, who holds an American passport, won a "Best in Media" title for being the most photographed and interviewed contestant, media reports said.

"I have broken all the barriers, and in the coming years there will be other Pakistani contestants who will carry this title," Moten, described by Pakistani media as the country's first bikini queen was quoted as saying.

"My intention was to project Pakistan in a very modern way."

Moten was born and brought up in the Pakistani city of Karachi. Her family moved to the United States eight years ago and she is now based in Houston.

Pakistani authorities said they might take up the issue with China, and might also withdraw from Moten privileges offered to people of Pakistani descent such as visa-free travel to Pakistan.

Moten, who said she might consider a career in the Pakistani film industry, was undeterred by the criticism.

"The hardliners are basically people who impose their thoughts on others, and we are not affected by people like them.

"It is actually very amusing how they are always so ready to react," the daily quoted her as saying.

Imagine a woman from Canada pretending to be an American (or USian if you prefer) so she can represent the US at the International Conference of Neo-Nazis to show that America is progressive towards facism.

How would you feel?

I assume you're from the US, but if you're not insert your country name in place of US.

Wouldn't bother me. It's probably been done.

What bothers the Pakistanis is the fact that she's hot looking, and in a bikini. And they aren't going to have a chance at getting any of that.

iit's their morality and they're offended; where in some countries it's perfectly llegal to smoke a joint in public in the USA you're likely to get life in the electric chair. A bikini to an american may seem harmless now but 80 yrs ago ia women would have likely been arrested in the US for wearing one in public. This part of the problem between muslims and the west, many westerners(and their governments) are completely insensitive to their customs and morality.

I agree with you it's harmless but it isn't to them, they have to evolve at their own pace not what we want. The USA has a difficult time accepting same sex marriage, in Canada we have accepted it as a basic human right, it's not our business to tell the USA to be as liberal as ours. Hopefully you'll catch up.

Apparently Pakistani legislators have nothing else to do ...

Bikini takes Pak assembly by storm

ISLAMABAD: A member of the Islamist alliance in Pakistan failed to agitate the issue of a Pakistan-born American girl in bikini in the National Assembly, but did arouse;) the interest of many legislators in her "shameful" :p photograph, the Daily Times reported on Wednesday.

Legislator Farid Piracha of the six-party alliance revealed the photograph of Mariyah Moten, 22, after the chair ignored his request to discuss how she came to claim to represent Pakistan when she was a US citizen.

Piracha was agitated  that her action had brought shame to the Islamist nation in the name of projecting a "soft image" of Pakistan, as Moten claimed.

Other legislators had a close look at her photograph ;) "and that seemed to be the extent of the debate," said the newspaper.

Maybe because he's not an ultra-conservative? Why is it awful when American Southerners are too conservative, but OK when it's Pakistanis?

You're making yourself a bigger martyr than the suicide bombers.
Can't you take your crusade against DK elsewhere?

I agree with you it's harmless but it isn't to them
It is harmless and incidents like this will help them to see that. Thus they will progress at their own pace.

Perhaps it is bad to impose liberalism on conservative societies, but that doesn't go as far as not even being permitted to offend conservative sensibilities.
