Another Strangelovian Move

By Curt Weldon.

From the movie:
General Jack D. Ripper: Mandrake, do you recall what Clemenceau once said about war? He said war was too important to be left to the generals. When he said that, 50 years ago, he might have been right. But today, war is too important to be left to politicians. They have neither the time, the training, nor the inclination for strategic thought.

Evidently, Weldon wants to pass a bill that will remove the ability of the President, or even Congress, or Rumsfeld to say when the troops come home from Iraq. He's going to try to "depoliticize" it by putting the decision solely in the hands of the commanders in theater. When they say it's done, they all come home.

You will note that Bush is opposed to this plan.

1. Pretty sure that's unconstitutional, with the President enshrined as C-in-C, it would be a hard call to justify removing his say so over military matters.

2. As much as I very much dislike this war and how it's being handled, there's also a very good reason why we have civilan control over the military and I am really iffy about removing that as well.

3. What's a touch re-election battle?

It means Weldon is doing this to distance himself from the war.
