Why is it separate from other Baptist movements? Does it exist as a right-wing political faction of the Baptist Church? (the SBC endorsed Bush in 2004)

Sorry, I'm not familiar with them. But there's a good article here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_Baptist_Convention

Not political per say, or at least not int he begining. They just were more conservative and didn't like the other Baptists.

They've gotten a lot more poltical though.

it's not a political thingy, it's a church. The SBC didn't endorse anyone, some of the higher-ups did but there isn't a law against someone saying who they are voting for is there? The southern baptist church has been around a really long time, since before Bush was born, in fact since before Bush Sr. was born

got anymore questions?

Yes, how are you seperated doctrinally from other Baptist denominations?

Actually, as near as I can tell from their history, they are what's left after everyone else says, "You are fucking nuts" and leaves to join saner churches. :)

I've got one. How many different flavors of Baptists' are there. Every time I drive down a country road, I see another variety. Berean, Southern, Primitive, and so on. Are they all that different?

we came about in the mid 1800's and were one of the first fundamental movements, we believe that there are a basic set of fundamental truths in Christianity, and the current Baptist church at the time was slacking off on some of them or changing them entirely.

Mostly how we are different from other Baptists is how we are different from other Protestants anyway.

"The Baptists are liberal pansy bastards and are thus heretics."

some of us didn't leave, there is a move to be less "nuts" and it's taking time, the current leadership has shifted a lot lately and it's getting to the point where we can actually do something........shhh.........don't tell

There are a lot, they are all different.

Primitive are actually more authoritative and legalistic than Southern Baptist, Freewill are even more legalistic than the Primitive.

As far as Baptists go, Southern Baptists are basically middle of the road in general, but we have some leadership issues in the SBC right now. You will find a great difference from one SB church to another since it's no longer required that we have to accept the Baptist Faith and Message (hasn't been since the 60's and the whole civil rights thing) in fact all you really have to do is agree on the fundamental truths, and say you are Southern Baptist to be a member of the convention, and being a member has some benifits.

Yes, I suppose some people stay and try to be the voice of moderation in their church. It must be tough. I suspect I'd send a lot of time smiling and nodding while in my head I'm shouting; "Please stop talking before I seizure!!!"

I love Christ, but personally, I think church would be a lot more beneficial to the community if they stopped talking about Him all the time. :p

Bill Clinton is a Southern Baptist. :)

He claims to be.

There's a difference between claiming to be and being.

Hitler claimed to be a Roman Catholic, but his private writings show that he was going after the Church when he got rid of the Jews.

I don't think Bill Clinton is out to destroy the Church; I think he's using it to gain points with the religious right. I may be wrong: I hope I'm wrong, but the evidence suggests otherwise to me.

He claims to be. Just as Hitler supposedly claimed to be a Roman Catholic (though his writings suggest otherwise).

Pat Robertson used to be Southern Baptist until he went nuts.....I mean for a little bit while he was nuts, but really we don't associate with him anymore and he thinks we are too liberal.

Also, Fallwell is getting tired of our "liberal policies"

:p

that's hilarious to you all isn't it? The SBC being too liberal for them.......or is it scary?

There's also a difference between being part of a group out of sense of idealism and blindly following the crowd.

Not that I believe Bill Clinton has an ideal he hasn't sold for scrap yet. :p

I'm just pointing out that comparing Bill Clinton, who is a lying bastard of a southern baptist and Adolph Hitler who was just a lying bastard is a bit of a stretch. :p
